Question:
Some innovators claim that the Prophet (s.) praised Abu Bakr as his hearing, Umar as his eye and Uthman as his heart, is this true?
Answer:
The disbelievers have lied!
Al-Husain (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Abu Bakr is with me in the position of hearing and Umar is with me in the position of sight and Uthman is with me in the position of heart. When the next day began to dawn, i entered his house while the commander of the faithful (a.), Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman were with him. So i said to him: “O my father, i heard you say something about those companions of yours, but what is it about?” The Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: All right. Then he pointed to them and said: “These are the hearing, the sight and the heart, and they will be questioned about this guardian authorized by me. Pointing to Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.), he said: “God says: “The hearing, the sight and the heart, they shall all be called to account.” (17:36) My Lord gave Him the honor that my entire congregation would be stopped and questioned about His guardianship (Wilayah) on the Day of Resurrection, and for this the Exalted One gave His Word: “Stop them, for they shall be called to account.” (37:24) [Uyun-ul-Akhbar of As-Saduq, Volume 2 Page 280 Hadith 86]
Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) called me to him while Salman, Abu Dharr and Al-Miqdad were with him. Thereupon, the Messenger (s.) sent Aishah to her father and Hafsah to her father, and he ordered his daughter to go to her husband Uthman, whereupon they went to him. He praised and glorified God and then said: “O Abu Bakr, o Umar, o Uthman, i saw twelve men on my pulpit in the night, who are turning my community away from the straight path, so fear God! Submit yourselves after me to the authority of Ali and do not dispute his succession! Neither shall you wrong him nor shall you ally yourselves with anyone against him!” They said: “O Prophet of God, we take refuge with God from such things, may God let us die before them!” He said: “I will let you and every man and woman in the house testify that Ali Ibn Abi Talib is my successor for my community and that he is more entitled to the believers than they are to themselves. When he passes away, it will be this son of mine.” He laid his hand on the head of Al-Hasan (a.): “If he dies, it will be this son of mine. And he laid his hand on the head of Al-Husain (a.): “After that there are nine from the descendants of Al-Husain, one after another, and these are the ones whom the Exalted One means by His statement: “Obey God and obey the Messenger and those who have authority among you.” (4:59) And there was no verse about the Imams (a.) except that the Prophet (s.) read it. Thereupon Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman stood up, while i and my companions, Abu Dharr, Salman and Al-Miqdad, remained seated and Fatimah, Al-Hasan and Al-Husain also remained in their seats. His wives and daughters rose up to Fatimah. The Messenger (s.) said: “I saw these three (Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman) and nine among the sons of Umayyah and one among the nine belongs to the family of Abu Sufyan and seven belong to the descendants of Al-Hakam Ibn Abi Al-As Ibn Umayyah. They make my community turn back on their heels (3:144).” The house of Ziyad was filled with the companions of the Prophet (s.), whereupon he went to them and said: “Keep what you have heard to yourselves, except for those who use their minds. O Ziyad, fear God concerning my followers after me.” When he left them, he came to us and said: “Mu’awiyah will confess to him and kill my followers, may God curse him!” [Kitab Sulaim, pages 441 – 442]
