A supplication of the Imams to see the deceased in a dream

Hasan Al-Abtahi writes:

روى السيد رضي الدين علي بن طاووس الحسني في كتابه فلاح السائل عن بعض أئمة أهل البيت عليهم السلام فقال: إذا أردت أن ترى ميتك فبت على طهر وانضجع على يمينك وسبح تسبيح فاطمة عليها السلام

,,Mr. Radi-ud-Din, Ali Ibn Musa Ibn Tawus Al-Hasani, narrated in his book Falah-us-Sa’il by one of the imams of the people of the house (a.). So he said: „If you want to see your deceased, spend the night with purification (washing) and lie down on your right side and say the praises of Fatimah (a.).”

ثم قل: اللَّهُمَ‏ أَنْتَ‏ الْحَيُ‏ الَّذِي‏ لَا يُوصَفُ‏ وَالْإِيمَانُ يُعْرَفُ مِنْهُ مِنْكَ بَدَأَتِ الْأَشْيَاءُ وَإِلَيْكَ تَعُودُ فَمَا أَقْبَلَ مِنْهَا كُنْتَ مَلْجَأَهُ وَ مَنْجَاهُ وَ مَا أَدْبَرَ مِنْهَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَلْجَأٌ وَلَا مَنْجَى مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَأَسْأَلُكَ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ‏ وَبِحَقِّ حَبِيبِكَ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ سَيِّدِ النَّبِيِّينَ، وَ بِحَقِّ عَلِيٍّ خَيْرِ الْوَصِيِّينَ، وَ بِحَقِّ فَاطِمَةَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ وَبِحَقِّ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ اللَّذَيْنِ جَعَلْتَهُمَا سَيِّدَيْ شَبَابِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ أَجْمَعِينَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَأَنْ تُرِيَنِي مَيِّتِي فِي الْحَالِ الَّتِي هُوَ فِيهَا

„Say on this: God, You are the Living One, Who is indescribable and from Whom knowledge is obtained through faith. From you things began and to you they return. Whatever of them occurred, you were their refuge and harbor, and whatever of them retreated, for that there was no refuge or harbor from you, except to you. So I ask You by “There is no God but You” and I ask You by “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” and I ask You by the right of Your beloved, Muhammad, God bless him and his family, the Lord of the Prophets and by the right of Ali, the best of the representatives and by the right of Fatimah, the Lady of the Women of the Worlds and by the right of Hasan and Husain, whom You made the masters of the youth of all the people of Paradise, to bless Muhammad and his family and the people of his house and to show me my deceased in the situation he is in. ”

على أي حال علمت الشاب هذا الدعاء ثم ذهب ولما عاد في الليلة المقبلة قال لي لم أذق البارحة النوم حتى الفجر وبعد صلاة الصبح غشيني النوم فرأيت أبي في حالة سيئة وطلب مني أن أتوسل له بالسيدة فاطمة الزهراء عليها السلام لينجو من سيئ حالته وقال لي ها هنا فهمت أن شفاعة السيدة الزهراء عليها السلام هي الوسيلة العظمى فاعتذر لي يا ولدي عند السيدة فاطمة لأني خرجت من الدنيا وحب أعدائها في قلبي

Be that as it may. I taught this prayer of supplication to a youth. Then he went away and when he returned the next night, he said to me: „I could not sleep yesterday until dawn and after morning prayer I fell asleep. Then I saw my father in a bad situation and he asked me to intercede for him with the Mistress Fatimah Zahra’ (a.) so that he could be saved from his bad situation and he said to me: ﴾Then I understood that the intercession of the Mistress Zahra’ (a.) is the most important middle (Wasilah). So excuse me, O my son, to the Lady Fatimah (a.), for I left the world while I had love in my heart for her enemies.﴿

فقلت لأبي بابا الأستاذ الذي دللتني عليه قد مات فهل رأيته هنا قال كلا لم يأتوا به إلى المكان الذي أنا فيه عند هذه النقطة من الحوار خرجت من الرؤيا أفقت من النوم لكني لم أر أستاذي في المنام لا البارحة ولا في الصباح فهل يمكن الليلة أن أدعو بهذا الدعاء لأراه قلت له: تراه إن شاء الله ولكنك إذا لم توفق لرؤيته فكرر الدعاء في الليلة التي بعدها ثم التي بعدها حتى تراه وتظفر بإذن الله بالمزيد من الكمالات على أثر ارتباطك الروحي بالأستاذ

I said: ﴾Father, the teacher to whom you refer me has died. Did you see him here?﴿ He said: ﴾Nothing. They did not bring him to this place where I am.﴿ At this point of the conversation, I left the dream. I awoke from sleep, but I had not seen my teacher in the dream. Neither yesterday nor this morning. Is it possible, then, that I should say this supplication this night, that I may see him?” I said to him: „You see him, if God willing, but if you do not succeed in seeing him, then repeat the supplication the night after. Then in the night after until you see him and with God’s permission you reach the increase of perfection through the effect of your spiritual connection with the Teacher.” [Al-Kamalat-ur-Ruhiyyah, Page 181 – 182]

Instruction:

[ 1. ] Do the partial wash (Wudu’) or full wash (Ghusl)

[ 2. ] Lie down on your right side to sleep

[ 3. ] Say then

34 times: Allahu Akbar

اللهُ أكبرُ

33 times: Subhana-llah

سُبحانَ اللهِ

33 times: Al-Hamdu li-llah

الحمدُ لِلَّهِ

[ 4. ] Say then:

Allahumma anta l-hayyu l-ladhi la yusafu wa l-Imanu yu’rafu minh

اللَّهُمَ‏ أَنْتَ‏ الْحَيُ‏ الَّذِي‏ لَا يُوصَفُ‏ وَالْإِيمَانُ يُعْرَفُ مِنْهُ

Minka bada’ati l-ashya’u wa ilaika ta’ud

مِنْكَ بَدَأَتِ الْأَشْيَاءُ وَإِلَيْكَ تَعُودُ

Fa-ma aqbala minha kunta maljahu wa-manjah

فَمَا أَقْبَلَ مِنْهَا كُنْتَ مَلْجَأَهُ وَمَنْجَاهُ

Wa-ma adbara minha lam yakun lahu malja’un wa-la manja minka illa ilaik

ومَا أَدْبَرَ مِنْهَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ مَلْجَأٌ وَلَا مَنْجَى مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ

Fa-as’aluka bi-la ilaha illa ant

فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Wa-as’aluka bi-bismillahi r-rahmani r-rahim

وَأَسْأَلُكَ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Wa-bi-haqqi habibika Muhammadin salla-llahu alaihi wa-alihi sayyidi n-nabiyyin

‏ وَبِحَقِّ حَبِيبِكَ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ سَيِّدِ النَّبِيِّينَ

Wa-bi-haqqi Aliyyin khairi l-wasiyyin

وَبِحَقِّ عَلِيٍّ خَيْرِ الْوَصِيِّينَ

Wa-bi-haqqi Fatimata sayyidati nisa’i l-alamin

وَبِحَقِّ فَاطِمَةَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ

Wa-bi-haqqi l-Hasani wa l-Husaini l-ladhaini ja’altahuma sayyidai shababi ahli l-jannati ajma’in

وَبِحَقِّ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ اللَّذَيْنِ جَعَلْتَهُمَا سَيِّدَيْ شَبَابِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ أَجْمَعِينَ

An tusalliya ala Muhammadin wa-alihi wa-ahli baitih

أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ

Wa-an turiyani mayyiti fi l-hali l-lati huwa fiha.

وَأَنْ تُرِيَنِي مَيِّتِي فِي الْحَالِ الَّتِي هُوَ فِيهَا
