Sa’d Al-Khaffaf reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said:“When the Commander of the Believers (a. ) was sitting in the mosque one day surrounded by his companions, someone from his followers came to him and said: ﴾O Commander of the Believers, God knows that I submit to Him by loving you in secret as I submit to Him by loving you in public and that I submit to you in secret as I submit to you in public.﴿ Then the Commander of the Believers (a.) said to him: ﴾You have spoken the truth. Behold, now take a garment in case of poverty, for the poverty reaches our followers faster than the river reaches the bottom of the valley.﴿ Thereupon the person went on while he wept out of joy at the word of the Commander of the Believers (a.): ﴾You have spoken the truth.﴿ Someone from the Kharijites spoke to a companion of his near the Commander of the Believers (a.). So the one said to his companion: ﴾By God, I saw something today like never before. Someone came to him and he said to him: “You have spoken the truth.”﴿ Then the other said to him: ﴾I do not deny any of this. It is inevitable that when one says to him: “I love you.” He says to you: “You have spoken the truth. You know that I love him?﴿ He said: ﴾No.﴿ He said: ﴾I will now get up, so that I may say to him the same statement of that of the person. So he will say to me the same thing, that he said to him. ﴿ Then the person got up and he said to him the same statement of that of the person before him. So he looked at him thoroughly. Hereupon he said to him: ﴾You have lied. No, by God. Neither do you love me nor do I love you.﴿” He said: ﴾Then the Kharijite wept. So he said: ﴾O Commander of the Faithful, you receive me with this and God has verily known the opposite of this. Stretch out your hands. I swear allegiance to you.﴿ He said, ﴾On the basis of what?﴿ He said: ﴾On the basis of how Abu Bakr and Umar acted.﴿” He said: “Then he stretched out his hand and said: ﴾Strike it. May God curse them both. By God, it seems to me that you are being put to death while you are misguided and the mounts of Iraq are trampling on your face. So let not your strength deceive you.﴿” He said: “Then it was not long before the people of Nahrawan rebelled against him and the person went into the battlefield with them, whereupon he was put to death.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Vol. 41, page 294 – 295, Hadith 17]
