Grant him protection! [9:6]

Qur’an:

“If one of the associates (mushrikeen) asks you for protection, then grant him protection until he hears the word of God. After that, let him reach a place where he will be safe. This is because they are people who do not know.” [At-Tawbah 9:6]

وإن أحد من المشركين استجارك فأجره حتى يسمع كلام الله ثم أبلغه مأمنه ذلك بأنهم قوم لا يعلمون

Sunnah:

Al-Qushairi reported that a man said to Imam Ali (a.): “So if someone asks us to meet the Messenger (s.) about some matters after the four months have passed, he is not obliged to any agreement?” He said: “Yes, he is, for God says: “If one of the associates (mushrikeen) asks you for protection, then grant him protection!” (9:6) [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Volume 3 page 374 Hadith 2]

عن هاشم بن سليمان عن محمد بن علي عن القشيري قال إن رجلا قال لعلي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام: فمن أراد منا أن يلقى رسول الله في بعض الأمر بعد انقضاء الاربعة فليس عليه عهد؟ قال علي عليه السلام: بلا إن الله تعالى قال: وإن أحد من المشركين استجارك فأجره

Abu Al-Hasan Al-Qummi writes: “As for His statement thereafter: “If one of the associates (mushrikeen) asks you for protection, then grant him protection until he hears the word of God. After that, let him reach a place where he will be safe.” (9:6) So He said: “Read to him and let him know. Do not cause him any difficulty until he returns to a place where he is safe.” [Tafsir Al-Qummi, vol. 1 page 283]

قال أبو الحسن القمي: ثم قال وان أحد من المشركين استجارك فاجره حتى يسمع كلام الله ثم أبلغه مأمنه قال إقرأ عليه وعرفه لا تتعرض له حتى يرجع إلى مأمنه

Abu Hamzah At-Thumali reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “When Prophet Muhammad (s.) wanted to send an army, he would call them and make them sit in front of him. Then he would say: “Go out in the name of God and with God and in the way of God and with the confession of the Messenger! You shall neither exploit nor disfigure nor deceive nor kill an aged man or a child or a woman! Do not cut down a tree unless you are forced to do so! And whenever a man sees a man from among the Muslims and their most excellent, he is under protection until he hears the word of God. If he follows you, then he is your brother in faith and if he rejects, then let him reach a place where he is safe and seek refuge from him with God!” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: “Also good (Hasan).” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 page 27 Hadith 1; Mir’at-ul-Uqul by Al-Majlisi, Volume 18 page 352 Hadith 1]

علي بن إبراهيم عن أبيه عن ابن أبي عمير عن معاوية بن عمارة قال أظنه عن أبي حمزة الثمالي، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله إذا أراد أن يبعث سرية دعاهم فأجلسهم بين يديه ثم يقول: سيروا بسم الله وبالله وفي سبيل الله وعلى ملة رسول الله، لا تغلوا ولا تمثلوا، ولا تغدروا، ولا تقتلوا شيخا فانيا ولا صبيا ولا امرأة، ولا تقطعوا شجرا إلا أن تضطروا إليها وأيما رجل من أدنى المسلمين أو أفضلهم نظر إلى رجل من المشركين فهو جار حتى يسمع كلام الله فإن تبعكم فأخوكم في الدين وإن أبي فأبلغوه مأمنه واستعينوا بالله عليه. قال محمد باقر المجسي: كالحسن

Jamil Ibn Darraj reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “When Prophet Muhammad (s.) wanted to send an army, he would call them with their commander and make him sit beside him and his companions in front of him. Then he said: “Go forth in the name of God and with God and in the way of God and with the confession of the Messenger! Neither shall you cheat, nor exploit, nor cut a tree unless you are forced to do so, nor kill an elderly man or a child or a woman! Whenever any man sees in close proximity to the Muslims and their most excellent a man from those who associate (mushrik), he is under protection until he hears the word of God. If he has heard the word of God and follows you, then he is your brother in faith and if he rejects, then seek refuge from him with God and let him reach a place where he is safe!” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi wrote: “Authentic (Sahih).” Jamil Ibn Darraj reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Whenever a man from the Muslims sees a man from the associates (mushrikeen) removed or close to the army, he is under the protection.” Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi wrote: “Good (Hasan).” [Al-Kafi by Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 page 30 Hadith 9; Mir’at-ul-Uqul by Al-Majlisi, Volume 18 page 348 Hadith 9]

عدة من أصحابنا عن أحمد بن محمد، عن الوشاء، عن محمد بن حمران وجميل ابن دراج كلاهما عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله إذا بعث سرية دعا بأميرها فأجلسه إلى جنبه وأجلس أصحابه بين يديه ثم قال سيروا بسم الله وبالله وفي سبيل الله وعلى ملة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله لا تغدروا ولا تغلوا ولا تمثلوا ولا تقطعوا شجرة إلا أن تضطروا إليها ولا تقتلوا شيخا فانيا ولا صبيا ولا امرأة وأيما رجل من أدنى المسلمين و أفضلهم نظر إلى أحد من المشركين فهو جار حتى يسمع كلام الله فإذا سمع كلام الله عز وجل فإن تبعكم فأخوكم في دينكم وإن أبي فاستعينوا بالله عليه وأبلغوه مأمنه. قال محمد باقر المجلسي: صحيح وعن علي بن إبراهيم عن أبيه عن ابن أبي عمير، عن جميل عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام مثله إلا أنه قال: وأيما رجل من المسلمين نظر إلى رجل من المشركين في أقصى العسكر وأدناه فهو جار. قال محمد باقر المجلسي: حسن
