Al-Mufid about the shape of the earth

Muhammad Ibn Nu’man Al-Mufid writes:

أقول إن الفلك هو المحيط بالأرض الدائر عليها وفيه الشمس والقمر و سائر النجوم والأرض في وسطه بمنزلة النقطة في وسط الدائرة وهذا مذهب أبي القاسم البلخي وجماعة كثيرة من أهل التوحيد ومذهب أكثر القدماء والمنجمين، وقد خالف فيه جماعة من بصرية المعتزلة وغيرهم من أهل النحل

,,I say, that the firmament surrounds the earth, which revolves around the earth and wherein are the sun, moon and all other stars and the earth is in the center of it, like a point is in the center of a circle and this is the view of Abu l-Qasim Al-Bakhli and a large group of monotheists and the view of the majority of the ancient scholars and astronomers and a group of the Mu’tazilites of Basrah and other groups disagreed with this.”

أقول إن الأرض على هيئة الكرة في وسط الفلك وهي ساكنة لا تتحرك وعلة سكونها أنها في المركز وهو مذهب أبي القاسم وأكثر القدماء والمنجمين وقد خالف فيه الجبائي وابنه وجماعة غيرهما من أهل الآراء والمذاهب من المقلدة والمتكلمين

,,I say, that the earth is of roundish shape and in the center of the firmament and it stands still and does not move and the reason for it standing still consists in, that it is in the center and this is the view of Abu l-Qasim and the majority of the ancient scholars and astronomers and Al-Jaba’i and his son as well as other thinkers and traditional and discourse directions disagreed with this.” [Awa’il-ul-Maqalat, page 99 – 100]
