Distraction and play (6:32)

,,The life of this world is nothing but distraction and play and the abode of the hereafter is certainly better for those who are mindful. Do you not understand?” [Al-An’am 6:32]

وما الحياة الدنيا إلا لعب ولهو وللدار الآخرة خير للذين يتقون أفلا تعقلون

Hisham ibn Hakam reported that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: ,,O Hisham, upon this He reminded the people of intellect and awakened their desire for the Hereafter. Thus He said: ﴾The life of this world is nothing but distraction and play and the Hereafter abode is certainly better for those who are mindful. Do you not understand?﴿” (6:32) [Al-Burhan of Al-Bahrani, Volume 3, Page 24, Hadith 3]

محمد بن يعقوب عن أبي عبد الله الأشعري عن بعض أصحابنا رفعه عن هشام بن الحكم عن موسى بن جعفر الكاظم عليهما السلام أنه قال: يا هشام ثم وعظ أهل العقل ورغبهم في الآخرة فقال وما الحياة الدنيا إلا لعب ولهو وللدار الآخرة خير للذين يتقون أفلا تعقلون

Ali Ibn Muhammad reported, that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Whose distraction has increased, his intellect has decreased.” [Uyun-ul-Hikam of Al-Wasiti, page 448]

علي بن محمد الليثي عن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام أنه قال: من كثر لهوه قل عقله

Hasan Ibn Ali reported, that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: ,,The shining adornment of this world is only distraction and play and the abode of the hereafter is the real life. (29:64) O Jabir, it is not desirable for the believer to rely and trust in the shining adornment of this worldly life and know that the children of this world are the people of carelessness, illusion and ignorance and the children of the Hereafter are the believers, the doers, the abstainers, the people of knowledge and understanding (Fiqh) and the people of reflection, consideration and examination. They do not grow weary of the remembrance of God.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 75, Page 165, Hadith 2]

الحسن بن علي بن شعبة عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليهما السلام أنه قال: إن زينة زهرة الدنيا إنما هو لعب ولهو وإن الدار الآخرة لهي الحيوان يا جابر إن المؤمن لا ينبغي له أن يركن ويطمئن إلى زهرة الحياة الدنيا واعلم أن أبناء الدنيا هم أهل غفلة وغرور وجهالة وأن أبناء الآخرة هم المؤمنون العاملون الزاهدون أهل العلم والفقه وأهل فكرة واعتبار واختبار لا يملون من ذكر الله

Muhammad ibn Isma’il reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Anything, which distracted from the remembrance of God, is from the devil.” [Al-Khasa’is-ul-Fatimiyyah of Al-Kajuri, Volume 1, Page 71]

محمد بن إسماعيل عن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام أنه قال: كل ما ألهى عن ذكر الله فهو من إبليس

Ali Ibn Muhammad reported, that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Of people the most distant from salvation is the one, who is careless with distraction and fun.” [Uyun-ul-Hikam of Al-Wasiti, page 114]

علي بن محمد الليثي عن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام أنه قال: أبعد الناس من الصلاح المستهتر باللهو والمزاح

Muhammad ibn Ali reported, that Imam Al-Kazim (a.) said: ,,Any glance without contemplation is distraction, any silence without contemplation is carelessness and any statement without remembrance is (useless) chatter.” [Ma’din-ul-Jawahir of Al-Karajiki, page 24]

محمد بن علي بن عثمان عن موسى بن جعفر الكاظم عليهما السلام أنه قال: فكل نظر ليس فيه اعتبار فهو لهو وكل سكوت ليس فيه فكر فهو سهو وكل كلام ليس فيه ذكر فهو لغو

Muhammad ibn Hasan reported, that Imam Ali (a.) said: ,,Anything, which distracted from the remembrance of God, is playful diversion.” [Al-Fusul-ul-Muhimmah of Al-Amili, Volume 2, Page 242, Hadith 1747]

محمد بن الحسن عن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام أنه قال: كل ما ألهى عن ذكر الله فهو ميسر

Isma’il Al-Ju’fi reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: ,,Chess and trick track are playful diversions.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, Volume 17, Page 322, Hadith 22660]

محمد بن مسعود العياشي عن وعن إسماعيل بن جابر الجعفي عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليهما السلام قال: الشطرنج والنرد ميسر

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported about the Messenger of God (s.) as saying: ,,He forbade the sale of tricktrack and chess, while saying: ﴾Whoever did so, is like someone who eats pork.﴿” [Bihar-ul-Anwar, Volume 73, Page 330, Hadith 1]

محمد بن علي بن بابويه عن حمزة بن محمد عن عبد العزيز بن محمد عن محمد بن زكريا عن شعيب بن واقد عن الحسين بن زيد عن جعفر بن محمد عن محمد بن علي عن علي بن الحسين عن الحسين بن علي عن علي بن أبي طالب عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: ونهى عن بيع النرد والشطرنج وقال: من فعل ذلك فهو كآكل لحم الخنزير

Muhammad ibn Hasan reported, that Imam al-Baqir (a. ) said: ,,The playful diversion is chess and trick track and every gambling is playful diversion and the statues are the idols, which the associates used to serve and the divining arrows are the arrows, with which the associates used to divine from the Arabs in the (time of) ignorance and forbidden by God is the selling and buying of anything from it as well as the benefit from anything from it and it is a blemish from the work of Satan and God led the alcohol and playful diversion along with the idols.” (5:90) [Al-Fusul-ul-Muhimmah of Al-Amili, Volume 2, Page 242, Hadith 1749]

محمد بن الحسن عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليهما السلام أنه قال: الميسر النرد والشطرنج وكل قمار ميسر والأنصاب الأوثان التي كانت تعبدها المشركون والأزلام القداح التي كانت تستقسم بها المشركون من العرب في الجاهلية كل هذا بيعه وشراؤه والانتفاع بشيء من هذا حرام من الله محرم وهو رجس من عمل الشيطان وقرن الله الخمر والميسر مع الأوثان

Muhammad ibn Ali reported, that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,The angels flee during the gambling and curse those who are associated with it, except for hooves, leather socks, feathers and blades, for the angels are present and the Messenger of God (s.) used to compete with Usamah ibn Zaid and made horses race.” [Al-Hada’iq-un-Nadirah, volume 22, page 355]

محمد بن علي بن بابويه عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليهما السلام أنه قال: إن الملائكة لتنفر عن الرهان وتلعن صاحبه ما خلا الحافر والخف والريش والنصل فإنه يحضره الملائكة وقد سابق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أسامة بن زيد وأجرى الخيل

Ali Ibn Isma’il reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: ,,Every distraction of the believer is wrong except in three: In his horse training, his archery and his playing with his wife, for they are right.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 61, Page 216, Hadith 30]

الكافي عن محمد بن يحيى عن محمد بن أحمد عن علي بن إسماعيل رفعه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: كل لهو المؤمن باطل إلا في ثلاث: في تأديبه الفرس ورميه عن قوسه، وملاعبته امرأته فإنهن حق

Ala’ Ibn Sayabah reported, that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: ,,There is nothing wrong with the testimony of the one, who plays with pigeons and there is nothing wrong with the testimony of the fellow in a race, in which a bet is made, for the Messenger of God (s. ) made horses race and compete and used to say: ﴾The angels are present in the betting of leather socks, hooves and feathers and what is besides that, that is a forbidden bet.﴿” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah of Al-Amili, Volume 27, Page 413, Hadith 34086]

محمد بن الحسن باسناده عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى عن محمد بن موسى عن أحمد بن الحسن، عن أبيه، عن علي بن عقبة عن موسى النميري عن العلاء بن سيابة عن جعفر بن محمد الصادق عليه السلام قال: لا بأس بشهادة الذي يلعب بالحمام ولا بأس بشهادة صاحب السباق المراهن عليه، فان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله قد أجرى الخيل وسابق وكان يقول: إن الملائكة تحضر الرهان في الخف والحافر والريش وما سوى ذلك قمار حرام
