Commander of the believers as a name in the Scriptures

Muhammad ibn Mas’ud reported that Jabir ibn Yazid said:,,I said to Abu Ja’far (Al-Baqir): ﴾When was the Commander of the Believers (a.) given the name Commander of the Believers?﴿ He said: ﴾By God, this verse was revealed to Muhammad (s.): “And made them witnesses about themselves: am I not your Lord? And that Muhammad is My Messenger and that Ali is the Commander of the believers.” (7:172) So God named him, by God, the Commander of the believers (a.).﴿” And Jabir Ibn Yazid reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: ,,O Jabir, if the ignorant were knowing about when Ali (a.) was named the Commander of the Believers, they would not deny his right.” He said: ,,I said: ﴾My life be sacrificed to you, when did they give him the name?﴿ So he said to me: ﴾His word: ,,When your Lord took from the backs of the children of Adam their offspring and made them witnesses over themselves: Am I not your Lord? And that Muhammad is My Messenger and that Ali is the Commander of the believers.”﴿ (7:172) Then he said to me: ﴾O Jabir, so, by God, Muhammad (s.) delivered it.﴿” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 37, page 332 – 333, Hadith 72]

محمد بن مسعود عن جابر بن يزيد قال: قلت لأبي جعفر عليه السلام: متى سمي أمير المؤمنين أمير المؤمنين قال: والله نزلت هذه الآية على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وأشهدهم على أنفسهم ألست بربكم وأن محمد رسول الله وأن عليا أمير المؤمنين فسماه الله والله أمير المؤمنين وعن جابر بن يزيد عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: يا جابر لو يعلم الجهال متى سمي أمير المؤمنين علي لم ينكروا حقه قال: قلت جعلت فداك متى سمي فقال لي: قوله: وإذ أخذ ربك من بني آدم إلى ألست بربكم وأن محمد رسولي وأن عليا أمير المؤمنين قال: ثم قال لي: يا جابر هكذا والله جاء بها محمد صلى الله عليه وآله

Khalid ibn Yazid reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: ,,If the ignorant of this nation were knowing about when Ali (a.) was called the Commander of the Believers, then they would not deny his leadership and obedience to him.” I said: ,,When was he given the name Commander of the Believers?” He said: ,,When God received the covenant with the descendants of Adam (a.). So Gabriel (a.) came down to Muhammad (s.) with this: ,,When your Lord took from the backs of the children of Adam their offspring and made them witnesses over themselves: ,,Am I not your Lord?” And that Muhammad is My Messenger and that Ali is the Commander of the believers.” They said: “Yes.”﴿” (7:172) Then Abu Ja’far (Al-Baqir) said: ,,By God, God has given him a name that He did not give to anyone before him.” [Al-Yaqin by Ibn Tawus, page 284]

محمد بن العباس بن مروان عن علي بن العباس البجلي عن محمد بن مروان الغزال عن زيد بن المعدل عن أبان بن عثمان عن خالد بن يزيد عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: لو أن جهال هذه الأمة يعلمون متى سمي علي أمير المؤمنين لم ينكروا ولايته وطاعته قلت: متى سمي أمير المؤمنين قال: حيث أخذ الله ميثاق ذرية آدم عليه السلام كذا نزل به جبرئيل على محمد صلى الله عليه وآله: وإذ أخذ ربك من بني آدم من ظهورهم ذريتهم وأشهدهم على أنفسهم ألست بربكم وأن محمدا رسولي وأن عليا أمير المؤمنين قالوا: بلى ثم قال أبو جعفر عليه السلام: والله لقد سماه الله باسم ما سمي به أحدا قبله

Jabir ibn Yazid reported about Imam Al-Baqir (a.): ,,I said to him: ﴾Why was he given the name Commander of the Believers?﴿ He said: ﴾God gave him the name and so He sent it down in His Scripture, ,,When your Lord took from the backs of the children of Adam their offspring and made them witnesses over themselves: ,,Am I not your Lord? And that Muhammad is My Messenger and that Ali is the Commander of the believers.”﴿” (7:172) [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1, page 412, Hadith 4]

علي بن إبراهيم عن يعقوب بن يزيد عن محمد بن زياد بن عيسى عن أبي الربيع القزاز عن جابر بن يزيد عن محمد بن علي الباقر عليه السلام قال: قلت له: لم سمي أمير المؤمنين قال: الله سماه وهكذا أنزل في كتابه وإذ أخذ ربك من بني آدم من ظهورهم ذريتهم وأشهدهم على أنفسهم ألست بربكم وأن محمدا رسولي وأن عليا أمير المؤمنين

Muhammad Salih Al-Mazandarani writes: ,,His statement ﴾and that Muhammad is My Messenger﴿ (7:172) is a reference, to the fact that this was sent down. The hypocritical falsifiers removed it out of ill-will and obduracy.” [Sharh Usuli l-Kafi, Volume 7, Page 50]

قال الشيخ محمد صالح المازندراني: قوله وأن محمدا رسولي (٧:١٧٢) إشارة إلى أن هذا كان منزلا حذفه المحرفون المنافقون حسدا وعنادا

Muhammad Baqir Al-Majlisi writes: ,,The obvious of the narrative states, that the naming is located in the verse (7:172). So they removed it.” [Mir’at-ul-Uqul, Volume 4, page 371]
