Reading of confession for the ritual prayer (Tashahhud)

Muhammad Taqi Al-Majlisi writes:

وَسُـنَّـتْ أَسْـتْ کِـهْ بَـرْ إِيـنْ بِـيَـفْـزَايَـدْ چِـنَـانْـکِـهْ أَبُـو بَـصِـيـرْ أَزْ حَـضْـرَتِ إِمَـامِ جَـعْـفَـرْ عَـلَـيْـهِ سَـلَامْ نَـقْـلْ کَـرْدِهْ: بِـسْـمِ الـلَّٰـهِ وَبِـالـلَّٰـهِ وَالْـحَـمْـدُ لِـلَّٰـهِ وَخَـيْـرُ الْأَسْـمَـاءِ کُـلِّـهَـا لِـلَّٰـهِ, أَشْـهَـدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلَــٰهَ إِلَّا الـلَّٰـهُ وَحْـدَهُ لَا شَـرِيـکَ لَـهُ, وَأَشْـهَـدُ أَنَّ مُـحَـمَّـدًا عَـبْـدُهُ وَرَسُـولُـهُ, أَرْسَـلَـهُ بِـالْـحَـقِّ بَـشِـيـرًا وَنَـذِيـرًا بَـيْـنَ يَـدَيِ الـسَّـاعَـةِ, وَأَشْـهَـدُ أَنَّ رَبِّـي نِـعْـمَ الـرَّبُّ, وَأَنَّ مُـحَـمَّـدًا نِّـعْـمَ الـرَّسُـولُ, وَأَنَّ عَـلِـيًّـا نِّـعْـمَ الْـوَصِـيُّ وَنِـعْـمَ الْإِمَـامُ, الـلَّٰـهُـمَّ صَـلِّ عَـلَـى مُـحَـمَّـدٍ وَآلِ مُـحَـمَّـدٍ, وَتَـقَـبَّـلْ شَـفَـاعَـتَـهُ فِـي أُمَّـتِـهِ وَارْفَـعْ دَرَجَـتَـهُ, الْـحَـمْـدُ لِـلَّٰـهِ رَبِّ الْـعَـالِـمِـيـنَ

,,And it is custom (Sunnah) to add to it such as what Abu Basir narrated from Imam Ja’far (a.): ﴾In the name of God and with God. Praise and all the best names be to God. I testify that there is no God except God alone, Who has no associate, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. He sent him with the truth as a proclaimer and warner before the Hour and I bear witness that my Lord is the best Lord and that Muhammad is the best Messenger and that Ali is the best Authorized One and the best Imam. God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and hear his intercession for his nation and raise his level. Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds.﴿” [Fiqh-ul-Majlisi, page 29]

Formulation:

١. بِـسْـمِ الـلَّٰـهِ وَبِـالـلَّٰـهِ وَالْـحَـمْـدُ لِـلَّٰـهِ وَخَـيْـرُ الْأَسْـمَـاءِ کُـلِّـهَـا لِـلَّٰـهِ

1. Bismi-llāhi wa-bi-llāhi wal-ḥamdu li-llāhi wa-ḫayr-ul-asmāʾi kullihā li-llāh

1. In the name of God and with God, and praise and all the best names be to God.

٢. أَشْـهَـدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلَــٰهَ إِلَّا الـلَّٰـهُ وَحْـدَهُ لَا شَـرِيـکَ لَـهُ

2. Ašhadu al-lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā šarīka lah

2. I testify that there is no God except God alone, Who has no associate.

٣. وَأَشْـهَـدُ أَنَّ مُـحَـمَّـدًا عَـبْـدُهُ وَرَسُـولُـهُ

3. Wa-ašhadu anna muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa-rasūluh

3. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

٤. أَرْسَـلَـهُ بِـالْـحَـقِّ بَـشِـيـرًا وَنَـذِيـرًا بَـيْـنَ يَـدَيِ الـسَّـاعَـةِ

4. Arsalahu bil-ḥaqqi bašīraw-wa-naḏīran bayna yadayi s-sāʿah

4. He sent him with the truth as a herald and warner before the hour.

٥. وَأَشْـهَـدُ أَنَّ رَبِّـي نِـعْـمَ الـرَّبُّ

5. Wa-ašhadu anna rabbī niʿma r-rabb

5. And I testify that my Lord is the best Lord.

٦. وَأَنَّ مُـحَـمَّـدًا نِّـعْـمَ الـرَّسُـولُ

6. Wa-anna muḥammadan-niʿma r-rasūl.

6. And that Muhammad is the best messenger.

٧. وَأَنَّ عَـلِـيًّـا نِّـعْـمَ الْـوَصِـيُّ وَنِـعْـمَ الْإِمَـامُ

7. Wa-anna ʿaliyyan-niʿma l-waṣiyyu wa-niʿma l-imām

7. And that Ali is the best proxy and the best Imam.

٨. الـلَّٰـهُـمَّ صَـلِّ عَـلَـى مُـحَـمَّـدٍ وَآلِ مُـحَـمَّـدٍ

8 Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadiw-wa-āli muḥammad.

8. God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

٩. وَتَـقَـبَّـلْ شَـفَـاعَـتَـهُ فِـي أُمَّـتِـهِ وَارْفَـعْ دَرَجَـتَـهُ

9. Wa-taqabbal šafāʿatahu fi ummatihi wa-rfaʿ daraǧatah

9. And hear his intercession for his nation and raise his level.

١٠. الْـحَـمْـدُ لِـلَّٰـهِ رَبِّ الْـعَـالِـمِـيـنَ

10. Al-Ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn

10. Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds.
