Al-Amili on the desirability of hopelessness

Muhammad Al-Hurr Al-Amili writes:
باب أنه يستحب للداعي اليأس مما في أيدي الناس وأن لا يرجو الا الله

Chapter: It is desirable for the supplicant (Mustahab) to give up hope in what is in the hands of people and hope in none except God

٨٩٥٣ / ١ – محمد بن يعقوب، عن علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه وعلي بن محمد القاساني جميعا، عن القاسم بن محمد، عن سليمان بن داود المنقري، عن حفص بن غياث، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: إذا أراد أحدكم أن لا يسأل ربه شيئا إلا أعطاه فلييأس من الناس كلهم، ولا يكون له رجاء إلا من عند الله فإذا علم الله ذلك من قلبه لم يسأل الله شيئا إلا أعطاه، الحديث ورواه الطوسي في الأمالي كما يأتي في جهاد النفس

1/8953 – Muhammad Ibn Ya’qub, from Ali Ibn Ibrahim, from his father and Ali Ibn Muhammad Al-Qasani together, from Qasim Ibn Muhammad, from Sulaiman Ibn Dawud Al-Minqari, from Hafs Ibn Ghayyath that Abu Abdillah (As-Sadiq) said: ,,If one of you wants that he should not ask his Lord for anything except that He should answer him, then he should give up hope in all the people and have no hope except in God. Now if God learns that from his heart, then he asks God for nothing except that He hears him.” So much for the saying (Hadith) and At-Tusi narrated it in Al-Amali as it is yet to follow about self-discipline.

٨٩٥٤ / ٢ – أحمد بن فهد في عدة الداعي قال: وروي أن الله أوحى إلى عيسى عليه السلام: ادعني دعاء الحزين الغريق الذي ليس له مغيث، يا عيسى، سلني ولا تسأل غيري فيحسن منك الدعاء ومني الإجابة، الحديث

2/8954 – Ahmad Ibn Fahd said in Uddat-ud-Da’i: It is transmitted that God revealed to Jesus (a.):,,Address to Me the supplication of the distressed drowning man who has no helper. O Jesus, ask Me and ask none but Me. Then the supplication is befitting from you and the answering from Me.” So much for the saying (hadith).

٨٩٥٥ / ٣ – قال: وأوحى الله إلى موسى عليه السلام: يا موسى ما دعوتني ورجوتني فإني سأغفر لك على ما كان منك أقول: ويأتي ما يدل على ذلك في الصدقة وغيرها

3/8955 – He said: ,,God revealed to Moses (a.): ,,O Moses, as long as you ask Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you despite your transgressions.” I say: ,,It will still be followed by that which points to it for beneficence and other things.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah, Volume 7, pages 142 – 143]

The supplication of the drowning man is:

يَـا الـلَّٰـهُ يَـا رَحْـمَٰـنُ يَـا رَحِـيـمُ يَـا مُـقَـلِّـبَ الْـقُـلُـوبِ ثَـبِّـتْ قَـلْـبِـي عَـلَـى دِيـنِـکَ

„Yā allāhu yā raḥmanu yā raḥim. Yā muqalliba l-qulūb. Ṯabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.“ (Kamal-ud-Din, Volume 1, Page 380)
