Question:

Is polygamy not allowed these days, because a man must treat all women equally for marriage, but only an infallible imam can do this?

Answer:
This judgement is not correct and is often based on a misunderstanding of the text.

Hisham Ibn Al-Hakam reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.) about the verse: “Then marry whatever women you like, two, three or four. But if you are afraid not to treat (them) equally, then only one.” (4:3) He said: “By this is meant: “In financial expenses.” As for the word of the Exalted: “You will not be able to treat women equally, no matter how hard you try, but do not turn away (from one) altogether so that you leave them suspended.” (4:129) So by this is meant:”in showing love.” [Wasa’il-ush-Shi’ah by Al-Hurr Al-Amili, Volume 15 Pages 86 – 87 Hadith 1]

If you can finance four, you can marry four.
