Twelve of the Quraish

Question:

Who are the twelve commanders of the Quraish according to the reports reached by the lovers of Ahl-ul-Bait (a.)?

Answer:

In the Qur’an it says: “O you who believe obey God and obey the Messenger and those who have authority among you.” [An-Nisa’ 4:59]

يا أيها الذين الذين آمنوا أطيعوا الله وأطيعوا وأطيعوا الرسول وأولي الأمر منكم منكم

Jabir Ibn Samurah reported that he heard the prophet Muhammad (s.) say: “The commanders after me are twelve.” Then he said something I could not understand and I asked my father: “What did he say? He said: “They are all from the Quraish.” [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 469 – 470 Hadith 14]

حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن القطان قال: حدثنا أبو الحسين طاهر بن إسماعيل الخثعمي قال: حدثنا أبو كريب يعني محمد بن علاء الهمداني قال: حدثني عمي يعنى ابن عبيد الطنافسي عن سماك بن حرب، عن جابر بن سمرة قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله يقول: يكون بعدي اثنا عشر أميرا، ثم تكلم فخفي علي، ما قال: فسألت أبي ما الذي قال؟ فقال: قال: كلهم من قريش

Durais Ibn Abd Al-Malik reported that Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: “We are the Quraish, our followers are Arabs and our enemies are strangers.” [Ma’ani Al-Akhbar of As-Saduq, page 403 – 404 Hadith 1]

وبهذا الاسناد، عن الحسن بن يوسف، عن عثمان بن جبلة، عن ضريس ابن عبد الملك قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام يقول: نحن قريش، وشيعتنا العرب، وعدونا العجم

Abu Basir reported that Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Of us there are twelve rightly guided. Six of them have gone before and six of them are left and with the sixth God does what He loves.” [Uyun-ul-Akhbar of As-Saduq, Volume 2 Page 69 Hadith 37]

حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم بن إسحاق الطالقاني رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد الهمداني قال: حدثنا أبو عبد الله العاصمي عن الحسين بن قاسم بن أيوب عن الحسن بن محمد بن سماعه عن ثابت الصباغ عن أبي بصير عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: سمعته يقول: منا اثنا عشر مهديا مضى سته وبقى سته ويصنع الله في السادس ما أحب

Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Salit reported that Imam Al-Husain Ibn Ali (a.) said: “Of us there are twelve Rightly guided ones. The first of them is the commander of the faithful, Ali Ibn Abi Talib and the last of them is the ninth of my descendants and he is the rightfully (Haqq) Rising Imam (Qa’im).” [Kamal-ud-Din of As-Saduq, page 317 Hadith 3]

حدثنا أحمد بن زياد بن جعفر الهمداني قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن – هاشم، عن أبيه، عن عبد السلام بن صالح الهروي قال: أخبرنا وكيع بن الجراح، عن الربيع بن سعد، عن عبد الرحمن بن سليط قال: قال الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام منا اثنا عشر مهديا أولهم أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب، وآخرهم التاسع من ولدي، وهو الإمام القائم بالحق

Sulaim Ibn Qais reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Beware of your religion from three persons: In front of a man who reads the Qur’an so that he finds respect from you, draws his sword against his neighbor and accuses him of Shirk.” I said: “O Commander of the Believers, which of them is closer to the Association (Shirk)?” He said: “The accuser and in front of a man who lied every time he made a statement. He stretched it more than it corresponded to its length and in front of a man to whom God let authority fall into his hands, whereupon he claimed that obedience to him was obedience to God and disobedience to him disobedience to God and lied, for there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator. The creature shall not give his love in disobedience to God, for in disobedience to Him there is no obedience, and to him who was disobedient to God there is no obedience. Obedience belongs only to God and His Messenger (s.) and the commanders (4:59) and it was only commanded to obey the commanders, because they are infallible and perfectly pure (33:33) and do not command disobedience to Him.” [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 139 Hadith 158]

حدثنا أبي رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن – محمد بن عيسى، عن أبيه، عن حماد بن عيسى، عن عمر بن أذينة. عن أبان بن أبي عياش عن سليم بن قيس الهلالي قال: سمعت أمير المؤمنين عليا عليه السلام يقول: احذروا على دينكم ثلاثة: رجلا قرأ القرآن حتى إذا رأيت عليه بهجته اخترط سيفه على جاره ورماه بالشرك، فقلت: يا أمير المؤمنين أيهما أولى بالشرك؟ قال: الرامي، ورجلا استخفته الأحاديث كلما أحدثت أحدوثة كذب مدها بأطول منها، ورجلا آتاه الله عز وجل سلطانا فزعم أن طاعته طاعة الله ومعصيته معصية الله وكذب لأنه لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق، لا ينبغي للمخلوق أن يكون حبه لمعصية الله فلا طاعة في معصيته ولا طاعة لمن عصى الله، إنما الطاعة لله ولرسوله ولولاة الامر، وإنما أمر الله عز وجل بطاعة الرسول لأنه معصوم مطهر، لا يأمر بمعصيته وإنما أمر بطاعة أولي الأمر لأنهم معصومون مطهرون لا يأمرون بمعصيته
