Imams as worldly leaders

Question:

How would the Imams (a.) have governed as secular and political leaders?

Answer:

Abdullah Al-Ansari reported that Al-Mufaddal Ibn Umar said: “I made the circumambulation with Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) (on the pilgrimage), after which he looked at me and said: “O Mufaddal, why do I see you worried and with a changed colour?” I said to him: “My life be sacrificed to you, my eyes wander to the sons of Abbas and what is in their hands of dominion, power and force. If only this belonged to you, we would be in it with you.” He said: “O Mufaddal! if this belonged to us, it would be nothing but the keeping of the watch by night, the drifting by day, hard food and ragged clothes like the Commander of the Believers (a.) and if not, it would be fire. But this was kept away from us and yet we ate and drank. Have you seen a lamentation which God made a mercy like this?” [Al-Ghaibah of An-Nu’mani, page 297 Hadith 7]

حدثنا عبد الواحد بن عبد الله بن يونس، قال: حدثنا أبو سليمان أحمد بن هوذة الباهلي، قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن إسحاق النهاوندي، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن حماد الأنصاري، عن المفضل بن عمر، قال: كنت عند أبي عبد الله عليه السلام بالطواف، فنظر إلي، وقال: يا مفضل، ما لي أراك مهموما متغير اللون؟ قال: فقلت له: جعلت فداك، نظري إلى بني العباس وما في أيديهم من هذا الملك والسلطان والجبروت، فلو كان ذلك لكم لكنا فيه معكم، فقال: يا مفضل، أما لو كان ذلك لم يكن إلا سياسة الليل، وسباحة النهار وأكل الجشب، ولبس الخشن، شبه أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وإلا فالنار، فزوى ذلك عنا فصرنا نأكل ونشرب وهل رأيت ظلامة جعلها الله نعمة مثل هذا
