What does “Bid’ah” mean?

Question:

How is bid’ah (بدعة) to be understood in religion?

Answer:

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Every innovation (Bid’ah) is an misguidance and every misguidance is in the fire.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Page Volume 1 Page 57 Hadith 12]

عن جعفر الصادق عليه السلام عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله قال: كل بدعة ضلالة وكل ضلالة في النار

Al-Hasan Ibn Ali reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “As far as the custom (Sunnah) is concerned, it is the tradition of the Messenger of God (s.) and as far as the innovation (Bid’ah) is concerned, it is that what contradicted his custom.” [Tuhaf-ul-Uqul of Al-Harrani, page 211]

عن ﺍﻟﺤﺴﻦ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻠﻲ ﺑﻦ ﺍﻟﺤﺴﻴﻦ ﺑﻦ ﺷﻌﺒﺔ عن الإمام علي عليه السلام قال: أما السنة فسنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله. وأما البدعة فما خالفها

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “I have cursed seven people, God has cursed them and it is fulfilled by every prophet. Until he said: “The one who contradicts my custom (Sunnah).” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, volume 16 page 51 Hadith 17]

عن جعفر الصادق عليه السلام عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: إني لعنت سبعا لعنهم الله وكل نبي مجاب إلى أن قال: والمخالف لسنتي

Companions of Ibn Abi Umair reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Whoever contradicted the Book of God and the custom (Sunnah) of Muhammad (s.), has become a disbeliever (Kafir).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 70 Hadith 1]

عن أصحاب ابن أبي عمير عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: من خالف كتاب الله وسنة محمد صلى الله عليه وآله فقد كفر

Abdullah Ibn Muskan reported that Abu Al-Abbas said: “I asked Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) about the least matter, which makes one an associate (Mushrik), whereupon he said: “He who by his own view introduced a innovation (Bid’ah), whereupon he loved and hated because of it.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 2 Page 397 Hadith 2]

عن عبد الله بن مسكان عن أبي العباس قال: سألت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام عن أدنى ما يكون به الانسان مشركا قال: فقال من ابتدع رأيا فأحب عليه أو أبغض عليه

Aban Ibn Taghlib reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “The truly understanding person (Faqih) is the one who renounces the worldly, desires the hereafter and holds on to the custom (Sunnah) of the Prophet (s.).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 70 Hadith 8]

عن أبان بن تغلب عن الإمام الباقر عليه السلام قال: إن الفقيه حق الفقيه الزاهد في الدنيا الراغب في الآخرة المتمسك بسنة النبي صلى الله عليه وآله

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “No one introduced a innovation (Bid’ah), except by abandoning a custom (Sunnah).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 58 Hadith 19]

عن جعفر الصادق عليه السلام عن الإمام علي عليه السلام قال: ما أحد ابتدع بدعة إلا ترك بها سنة

Aban Ibn Taghlib reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The custom (Sunnah) is not subject of analogy (Qiyas). Do you not see that the woman makes up for her fasting but not her prayer? O Aban, if custom became the object of analogy, then the religion would be destroyed.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 57 Hadith 15]

عن أبان بن تغلب عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: إن السنة لا تقاس ألا ترى أن امرأة تقضي صومها ولا تقضي صلاتها يا أبان إن السنة إذا قيست محق الدين

Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “There is no word except with an action and there is no word nor action except with an intention and there is no word nor action nor intention except with the adherence to the custom (Sunnah).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 70 Hadith 9]

عن علي بن ابي طالب عليه السلام عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله قال: لا قول إلا بعمل ولا قول ولا عمل إلا بنية ولا قول ولا عمل ولا نية إلا بإصابة السنة

Abu Basir reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “We are dealing with something that we do not know in the Book of God nor in custom (Sunnah). Do we form our own view of it?” He said: “No, if you are right, you will not be rewarded, and if you are wrong, you have lied about God.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 56 Hadith 10]

عن أبي بصير قال قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: ترد علينا أشياء ليس نعرفها في كتاب الله ولا سنة فننظر فيها؟ فقال: لا أما إنك إن أصبت لم تؤجر، وإن أخطأت كذبت على الله عز وجل

Muhammad Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Beware, of giving such a position to someone without proof, that you confirm him in everything he has said.” [Al-Fusul of Al-Amili, Volume 1 Hadith 766]

عن محمد بن الحسين عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: إياك أن تنصب أحدا دون الحجة فتصدقه في كل ما قال

Al-Husain (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “The custom (Sunnah) consists of two customs: A custom regarding a obligation, by which the following of it is the right guidance and refraining from it is misguidance, and a custom regarding something that is not obligatory and by which, the following of it is excellence and the refraining from it, is not a sin.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 71 Hadith 12]

عن الحسين بن علي عن الإمام علي صلوات الله عليهم قال: السنة سنتان سنة في فريضة الأخذ بها هدى وتركها ضلالة وسنة في غير فريضة الأخذ بها فضيلة وتركها إلى غير خطيئة

Muhammad Ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “O you people, you are obligated by the traditions of the Messenger (s.) and his custom (Sunnah) and the traditions of the guiding Imams (a.) from the people of the house of the Messenger (s.), for those who followed these things, they were guided, and those who failed to do so and turned away from them went astray, for it is to them that God commanded obedience (4:59) and closeness (5:55).” [Al-Wasa’il of Al-Amili, volume 27 Hadith 33281]

عن محمد بن الحسين عن الإمام الصادق عليه السلام قال: أيتها العصابة عليكم بآثار رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسنته وآثار الأئمة الهداة من أهل بيت الرسول صلى الله عليه وآله فإنه من أخذ بذلك فقد اهتدى ومن ترك ذلك ورغب عنه ضل لأنهم  هم الذين أمر الله بطاعتهم وولايتهم
