What does “Iyal” mean?

Question:

What is meant by the word “Iyal” (عيال)?

Answer:

The word “Iyal” (عيال), which unfortunately is often translated as “children of God”, is the plural of “Ayyil” (عيّل) and means as much as “relatives.”

Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Al-Hajjaj reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Five people are not given alms: the father, the mother, the child, the serf and the wife and this is because they are your own relatives (Iyal) who need you.” Hadi An-Najafi writes: “The tradition is authentic according to its chain (Sahih).” [Mawsu’at Ahadith Ahl Al-Bait, Volume 7 Page 377 Hadith 5]

الكليني، عن محمد بن يحيى، عن محمد بن الحسين، عن صفوان بن يحيى، عن عبد الرحمن بن الحجاج، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: خمسة لا يعطون من الزكاة شيئا الأب والأم والولد والمملوك والمرأة وذلك أنهم عياله لازمون له. قال الشيخ هادي النجفي: الرواية صحيحة الإسناد

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The creatures are the relatives of God (Iyal) and the creature most loved by God is the one that is beneficial to the relatives of God and brings joy to the people of the house.” Hadi An-Najafi writes: “The tradition is authentic according to its chain (Mu’tabar).” [Mawsu’at Ahadith Ahl Al-Bait, Volume 7 Page 376 Hadith 1]

الكليني، عن علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن النوفلي، عن السكوني، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: الخلق عيال الله فأحب الخلق إلى الله من نفع عيال الله وأدخل على أهل بيت سرورا. قال الشيخ هادي النجفي: الرواية معتبرة الإسناد

Abu Hamzah Ath-Thumali reported that Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (a.) said: “The one of you who is most satisfied with God is the one of you who is most generous to His relatives (Iyal).” Hadi An-Najafi writes: “The tradition is authentic according to its chain (Sahih).” [Mawsu’at Ahadith Ahl Al-Bait, Volume 7 Page 377 Hadith 6]
