What does the word “Batri” or “Batriyyah” mean?

Answer:

The word “Batri” (بتري) comes from “batara” (بتر) / “yabtaru” (يبتر) and means as much as “to cut off” and “Batriyyah” (بترية) is a form of the plural, i.e. plural, which means as much as ” those who are cut off.”

Uthman Ar-Rawasi reported that Sadir said: “I came in to Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (a.) while Salamah Ibn Kuhail, Abu l-Miqdam Thabit Al-Haddad, Salim Ibn Abi Hafsah and Kathir An-Nawwa’ were with me and with them was a group while with Abu Ja’far (a.) was his brother Zaid Ibn Ali (a.). They said to Abu Ja’far (a.): “We are close to Ali and Hasan and Husain (Wilayah) and we keep our distance (Bara’ah) from their enemies!” He said: “Yes.“ They said: “We are close (Wilayah) to Abu Bakr and Umar and we distance ourselves (Bara’ah) from their enemies!” Then Zaid Ibn Ali (a.) turned to them and said: “You are distancing (Bara’ah) from Fatimah? You have cut off from our matter, may God cut you off!” From that day on, they were called those who are cut off (Batriyyah).” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 69 page 178]

رجال الكشي: سعد بن جناح، عن علي بن محمد بن يزيد، عن ابن عيسى، عن الأهوازي، عن فضالة، عن الحسين بن عثمان، عن سدير قال: دخلت على أبي جعفر عليه السلام ومعي سلمة بن كهيل، وأبو المقدام ثابت الحداد، وسالم بن أبي حفصة، وكثير النواء، وجماعة معهم، وعند أبي جعفر عليه السلام أخوه زيد بن علي عليهم السلام فقالوا لأبي جعفر عليه السلام نتولى عليا وحسنا وحسينا ونتبرأ من أعداهم! قال: نعم قالوا: نتولى أبا بكر وعمر ونتبرأ من أعدائهم! قال: فالتفت إليهم زيد بن علي قال لهم: أتتبرؤن من فاطمة بترتم أمرنا بتركم الله، فيومئذ سموا البترية

Abu Amr Sa’d Al-Hallab reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Even if the those who are cut off (Batriyyah) stood in a line from east to the west, God would not honor any religion through them.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 37 page 31]

قال الكشي في كتاب الرجال: حدثني سعد بن الصباح الكشي، عن علي بن محمد، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن محمد بن إسماعيل بن بزيع، عن محمد بن فضيل، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن سعد الجلاب عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: لو أن البترية صف واحد ما بين المشرق إلى المغرب ما أعز الله بهم دينا

Al-Washsha’ reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “Among those who claim to love us, the people of the house, belongs those who are a worse temptation than the deceiver (Dajjal).” I said: “O son of the messenger of God, how is that?” He said: “By being close (wilayah) to our enemies and hostile to those who are close (wilayah) to us. If that is the case, then truth and falsehood are mixed together, and the matter becomes unclear, so that the believer cannot be distinguished from the hypocrite.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 72 page 391]

وباسناده، عن الوشاء عن الرضا عليه السلام قال: إن ممن يتخذ مودتنا أهل البيت لمن هو أشد فتنة على شيعتنا من الدجال، فقلت: يا بن رسول الله بماذا؟ قال: بموالاة أعدائنا ومعاداة أوليائنا، إنه إذا كان كذلك اختلط الحق بالباطل واشتبه الامر، فلم يعرف مؤمن من منافق

Abu l-Jarud reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “If the Rising one (Qa’im) rises, he will arrive in Kufa. Then, some tens of thousands of people named as those who are cutt off (Batriyyah) go out and tell him: “Why do you not go back to where you came from, because we do not need the children of Fatimah!” Then he puts the sword on them until he comes to the last of them. Then he enters Kufa and kills every doubting hypocrite in it and destroys their mansions to the ground and kills the fighters in it until God is satisfied.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 52 page 338]

الإرشاد: روى أبو الجارود، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام في حديث طويل أنه قال: إذا قام القائم عليه السلام سار إلى الكوفة، فيخرج منها بضعة عشر آلاف أنفس يدعون البترية عليهم السلاح فيقولون له: ارجع من حيث جئت فلا حاجة لنا في بني فاطمة فيضع فيهم السيف حتى يأتي على آخرهم، ثم يدخل الكوفة، فيقتل بها كل منافق مرتاب، ويهدم قصورها، ويقتل مقاتليها حتى يرضى الله عز وعلا
