What does “Jacob/Israel” mean?

What is the meaning of “Jacob” and “Israel”?

Answer:

Muhammad Ibn Umarah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Jacob and Esau were twin brothers, but first Esau was born and then Jacob. Therefore he was called Jacob because he was born after his brother and Jacob is Israel and Israel means servant of God, because isra is servant and El is God.” [Ilal-ush-Shara’i from As-Saduq, Volume 1, page 43]

حدثنا أحمد بن الحسين القطان قال: حدثنا الحسن بن علي السكري قال حدثنا محمد بن زكريا الجوهري، قال حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن عمارة، عن أبيه عن أبي عبد الله عليه الصلاة والسلام قال: كان يعقوب وعيص توأمين، فولد عيص ثم ولد يعقوب فسمي يعقوب لأنه خرج بعقب أخيه عيص، ويعقوب هو إسرائيل ومعنى إسرائيل عبد الله، لان إسرا هو عبد، وايل هو الله عز وجل
