What does “Qa’im / Mahdi” mean?

What is meant by the titles “Qa’im” and “Mahdi”?

Answer:

Abu Sa’id Al-Khurasani reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “For what reason was he called the Rising One (Qa’im)? He said: “Because he rises after he dies. He rises with a mighty command. He rises by the command of God.” [Al-Ghaibah of At-Tusi, page 422 Hadith 403]

الفضل بن شاذان، عن موسى بن سعدان، عن عبد الله بن قاسم الحضرمي، عن أبي سعيد الخراساني قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: لأي شئ سمي القائم؟ قال: لأنه يقوم بعدما يموت، إنه يقوم بأمر عظيم يقوم بأمر الله سبحانه

Ali Ibn Al-Khattab reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) was asked by someone who calls to prayer: “Is there an example in the Book of God for the Rising one (Qa’im)?” He said: “Yes, the verse about the owner of the donkey (2:259). God let him die and then raised him to life after a hundred years.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 51 page 224]

وعنه، عن أبيه، عن جعفر بن محمد الكوفي، عن إسحاق بن محمد، عن القاسم ابن الربيع، عن علي بن الخطاب، عن مؤذن مسجد الأحمر قال: سألت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام هل في كتاب الله مثل للقائم؟ فقال: نعم، آية صاحب الحمار أماته الله مائة عام ثم بعثه

Abu Sa’id Al-Khurasani reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “Is the guided one (Mahdi) and the Rising one (Qa’im) the same? He said: “Yes.” I asked: “For what reason was he called the guided one (Mahdi)?” He said: “Because he guides to a hidden command and he was called the Rising one (Qa’im), because he rises after he dies. الغيبة للشيخ الطوسي: الفضل, عن موسى بن سعدان, عن عبد الله بن القاسم الحضرمي عن أبي سعيد الخراساني, قال: قلت لابي عبد الله عليه السلام: المهدي والقائم واحد؟ فقال: نعم فقلت: لاي شئ سمي المهدي قال: لانه يهدي إلى كل أمر خفي وسمي القائم لانه يقوم بعدما يموت إنه يقوم بأمر عظيم

Muhammad Ibn Ajlan reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “When the Rising One (Qa’im) rises, he calls the people to Islam in a reforming way and leads them straight to a command from which the majority deviated and went astray. The Rising One (Qa’im) was named as the Guided one (Mahdi) because he guides to an order from which people strayed and he was named as the Rising One (Qa’im) because he rises with the truth.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 51 page 30]

روى محمد بن عجلان عن أبي عبد الله عليه‌ السلام قال: إذا قام القائم عليه‌ السلام دعا الناس إلى الاسلام جديدا وهداهم إلى أمر قد دثر وضل عنه الجمهور وإنما سمي القائم مهديا لانه يهدي إلى أمر مضلول عنه وسمي القائم لقيامه بالحق

Al-Hakam Ibn Abi Nu’aim reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “O Hakam, we are all the rising ones (Qa’im) by the command of God. I said: “Are you the guided one (Mahdi)?” He said: “We all guide rightly towards God.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 1 Page 536 Hadith 1]
