The inner disbelief (Batin)
Question:
What causes the inner disbelief of a person?
Answer:
Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Al-Hajjaj reported that Hashim Sahib Al-Barid said: “I met with Muhammad Ibn Muslim and Abu l-Khattab and Abu l-Khattab said to us: “What do you say about the one who did not recognize this matter?” I said: “The one who did not recognize this matter is an disbeliever.” Abu l-Khattab said: “He is not an disbeliever until clear evidence is brought against him. So if the clear evidence is given against him and he did not recognize it, then he is an disbeliever.” Then Muhammad Ibn Muslim said to him: “Praise be to God, what has he got that he becomes an disbeliever if he did not recognize him and did not deny him? He is not an disbeliever if he did not deny him.” When i had proved the evidence, I went to Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) and told him about it and he said: “You are present and they are absent, but your appointment is in the middle of Al-Jamarah in Mina that night.” When the night came, we gathered with Abu l-Khattab and Muhammad Ibn Muslim at his place and he reached for a pillow and put it on his chest. Then he said to us: “What do you say about your servants and your wives and your people? Do they not testify that none is worthy to be worshipped except God?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do they not testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God?” I said: Yes, they do.” He said: “Do they not establish regular prayer and fasting and pilgrimage?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do they know what you are on?” I said: “No.” He said: “Then what are they with you?” I said: “Whosoever does not recognize this matter is an disbeliever.” He said: “Praise be to God, have you not seen the people by the roads and the waters?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do they not establish regular prayer, fasting and pilgrimage? Do they not bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but God? Do they not witness that Muhammad is the messenger of God?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do they know what you are on?” I said: “No.” He said: “Then what are they with you?” I said: “He who did not recognize this matter is an disbeliever.” He said: “Praise be to God, have you not seen the house of God, and the round about, and the people of Yemen, and their pushing to the curtains of the house of God?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do they not bear witness that there is none worthy to be worshipped but God? Do they not testify that Muhammad is the messenger of God? Do they not establish regular prayer, fasting and pilgrimage?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do they know what you are on?” I said: “No.” He said: “What do you say about them?” I said: “He who did not recognize this matter is an disbeliever.” He said: “Praise be to God, this is the view of those who went out against Ali (Khawarij)!” Then he said: “If you like, I will tell you.” I said: “No.” He said: “It is bad for you to say something you have not heard from us.” It occurred to me that he was telling us about the statement of Muhammad Ibn Muslim.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 2 Page 401 – 402 Hadith 1]
