Shoes strengthen the genitals?

Question:

One of the innovators claimed that yellow shoes strengthen the genitalia of men. The accuser mentioned Al-Khisal on page 99 and the 6th volume of Al-Kafi on page 465 as sources.

Answer:

The Servants of Umar have lied!

Abdullah Ibn Jabalah reported that Hanan Ibn Sadir said: “I came in to Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) and i wore black shoes.” Then he said: “What is it with you and the black shoes? Do you not know that they have three characteristics?” I said: “And what are they? May my life be sacrificed to you.” He said: “They weaken the eyesight, they make the man careless, and they create depression, and besides, this is part of the clothing of tyrants. It is for you to put on the yellow shoes, for they have three characteristics: they sharpen the sight, they strengthen the man, and they remove depression, and moreover this is part of the clothing of the prophets (a.)”. [Al-Khisal of As-Saduq, page 99 Hadith 50]

حدثنا أبي رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا أحمد بن إدريس قال: حدثني محمد بن أحمد، عن موسى بن عمر، عن عبد الله بن جبلة، عن حنان بن سدير قال: دخلت على أبي عبد الله عليه السلام وعلي نعل سوداء فقال: مالك ولبس نعل سوداء! أما علمت أن فيها ثلاث خصال؟ قال: قلت: وما هي جعلت فداك؟ قال: تضعف البصر، وترخي الذكر، وتورث الهم وهي مع ذلك من لباس الجبارين، عليك بلبس نعل صفراء فان فيها ثلاث خصال قال: قلت: وما هي قال: تحد البصر، وتشد الذكر، وتنفي الهم، وهي مع ذلك من لباس الأنبياء عليهم السلام

Muhammad Ibn Ali Al-Hamdani reported that Hanan Ibn Sadir said: “I came in to Imam Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) while wearing black shoes on my feet.” Then he said: “O Hanan, what is it with you and black shoes? Do you not know that they have three characteristics: They weaken the eyesight, they make the man careless and they create depression, and moreover they are part of the clothing of the tyrants.” I said: “What shoes should i wear?” He said: “Yellow shoes are for you, for they have three characteristics: they sharpen the sight, they strengthen the man, and they remove depression, and besides, this is part of the clothing of the prophets (a.).” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 6 Page 465 Hadith 2]

عدة من أصحابنا, عن سهل بن زياد, عن محمد بن عيسى, عن محمد بن علي الهمداني عن حنان بن سدير قال: دخلت على أبي عبد الله عليه السلام وفي رجلي نعل سوداء فقال: يا حنان مالك وللسوداء أما علمت أن فيها ثلاث خصال: تضعف البصر, وترخي الذكر, وتورث الهم ومع ذلك من لباس الجبارين قال: فقلت: فما ألبس من النعال قال: عليك بالصفراء فإن فيها ثلاث خصال: تجلو البصر, وتشد الذكر, وتدرء الهم وهي مع ذلك من لباس النبيين

The word “dhakar” (ذكر), whose plural is “dhukur” (ذكور), means “man” and not the primary genital characteristic.

The Qur’an says:

“What is in the bodies of these animals is reserved for the men among us.” [Al-An’am 6:139]

ما في بطون هذه الأنعام خالصة لذكورنا

Nafi’ reported that Abdullah Ibn Umar said: “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) made the donation of breaking the fast obligatory on the man, the woman, the free man and the slave in the form of a unit of weight of dates or barley.” He said: “Therefore the people made it equal to half the weight of wheat.” Abu Isa At-Tirmidhi writes: “This tradition is good (Hasan) and authentic (Sahih).” [Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 675]

حدثنا قتيبة حدثنا حماد بن زيد عن أيوب عن نافع عن ابن عمر قال فرض رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صدقة الفطر على الذكر والأنثى والحر والمملوك صاعا من تمر أو صاعا من شعير قال فعدل الناس إلى نصف صاع من بر قال أبو عيسى الترمذي: هذا حديث حسن صحيح

Furthermore, yellow shoes are not unknown in the works of the innovators.

Evidence:

Ata’ reported that Abdullah Ibn Abbas said: “Those who wear yellow shoes will always look towards the joy.” Then he said: “It should be a yellow cow, whose colour is intense and which gives pleasure to the spectators.” (2:69) [Mizan-ul-I’tidal by Adh-Dhahabi, volume 3 page 351]

حدثناه جدى، حدثنا عبد العزيز بن الخطاب، حدثنا الحسن بن على النميري، عن فضل بن الربيع، عن ابن جريج، عن عطاء، عن ابن عباس، قال: من لبس نعلا صفراء لم يزل ينظر في سرور، ثم قرأ: بقرة صفراء فاقع لونها تسر الناظرين

Muhammad Ibn Ahmad As-Safarani writes: “Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari said: “I saw the Prophet Muhammad (s.) praying in shoes made of cowhide.” Wearing yellow shoes and red or black sandals is desired (Mustahab). Our scholars, God have mercy on them, said: “The wearing of yellow shoes and red or black sandals is desired (Mustahab).” In Al-Adab it is reported that Yahya Ibn Abi Kathir said: “Black shoes creates depression.” And I think Al-Qadi Iyad mentioned it in his book on clothing and he concluded that it is frowned upon (Makruh).” [Ghidha’-ul-Albab Fi Sharh Manzumat Al-Adab, Volume 2 Page 338]
