Permission for sodomy?

First question:

The innovators claimed that Imam Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir (a.) was asked about whether the believer is tested with homosexuality or bestiality, whereupon he would have confirmed it and said that the believer must be on top and not at the bottom. What is the true wording of the report?

Answer:

The servants of Umar have lied!

Muhammad Ibn Ali reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) was asked: “Is the believer being tested?” He said: “Yes, but he gets the upper hand and the upper hand does not prevail over him.” [Al-Mahasin of Al-Barqi, Volume 1 Page 113 Hadith 107]

عنه، عن محمد بن علي، عن غير واحد من أصحابه، يرفعه إلى أبي جعفر عليه السلام، قال: قيل له: يكون المؤمن مبتلى؟ – قال: نعم، ولكن يعلو ولا يعلى

Just as God said to Moses (a.):

“Fear not: for you will prevail.” [Taha 20:68]

لا تخف إنك أنت الأعلى

Second question:

Furthermore, the innovators claim that Imam Ali (a.) allowed sodomy by saying that sodomy is not similar to going in to the buttocks and is not disbelief. What is the actual text of the report?

Answer:

The servants of Umar have lied!

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Homosexuality is smaller than the buttocks, and the buttocks is disbelief.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 544 Hadith 3]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن النوفلي، عن السكوني، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: قال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: اللواط ما دون الدبر والدبر هو الكفر

As the Qur’an says:

“God does not forgive anyone who associates with Him, but He forgives anyone less than that to whom He wills.” [An-Nisa’ 4:48]

وقوله تعالى: إن الله لا يغفر أن يشرك به ويغفر ما دون ذلك لمن يشاء

Al-Husain (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “Homosexuality is between the thighs and the buttocks is disbelief.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il by Al-Mirza An-Nuri, Volume 18, Page 79 Hadith 3]

عن جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده، عليهم السلام قال: قال علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام: اللواط بين الفخذين، والدبر هو الكفر

And the reports of the Infallible (a.) about the prohibition of sodomy are numerous.

Evidence:

Al-Husain (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) was questioned: “What is the attitude of someone who has contact with a man through the thighs or buttocks?” He said: “For both of these things they will receive the punishment for transgressing the law of God.” [Mustadrak-ul-Wasa’il by Al-Mirza An-Nuri, Volume 18, Page 79 Hadith 4]

عن جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده، عليهم السلام عن علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام في الذي يأتي الرجل بين فخذيه، أو في دبره، قال: أيهما أتى، فعليه الحد

Al-Husain (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “If someone should be stoned twice, it would be the one who practices homosexuality.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 199 Hadith 3]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن النوفلي، عن السكوني، عن أبي عبد الله، عن آبائه عليهم السلام قال: قال أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام: لو كان ينبغي لاحد أن يرجم مرتين لرجم اللوطي

Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.) reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “If a man is caught with a boy unclothed under a blanket, then he should be slain and the boy should be taught a lesson. If he has penetrated and was in a marital bond, then the stoning shall be carried out on him.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 200 – 201 Hadith 12]

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن ابن محبوب، عن هشام بن سالم، عن أبي بصير، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: سمعته يقول: إن في كتاب علي عليه السلام إذا اخذ الرجل مع غلام في لحاف مجردين ضرب الرجل وأدب الغلام وإن كان ثقب وكان محصنا رجم

Abu Bakr Al-Hadrami reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The commander of the believers (a.) brought a man and a woman whose husband practiced homosexuality with their son from another marriage and penetrated him. When witnessed by four people, the Commander of the Faithful (a.) ordered that the man be slain and killed with a sword and that the boy be beaten below the punishment for violating the laws of God. Imam Ali said: “Had it been you, my judgment on you would have been killing, because you allowed the man to penetrate you.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 199 Hadith 4]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن سهل بن زياد، عن بكر بن صالح، عن محمد بن سنان، عن أبي بكر الحضرمي، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: اتي أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام برجل وامرأة قد لاط زوجها بابنها من غيره وثقبه وشهد عليه بذلك الشهود فأمر به أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام فضرب بالسيف حتى قتل وضرب الغلام دون الحد وقال: أما لو كنت مدركا لقتلتك لامكانك إياه من نفسك بثقبك

Abd-ur-Rahman Ibn Al-Hajjaj reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Imam Ali (a.) used to give hits to both men who were under a blanket as punishment for transgressing the laws of God and to both women who were under a blanket as punishment for transgressing the laws of God.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 181 – 182 Hadith 7]

محمد بن إسماعيل، عن الفضل بن شاذان، عن ابن أبي عمير، وعلي بن إبراهيم عن أبيه، عن ابن أبي عمير، عن عبد الرحمن بن الحجاج قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله عليه السلام يقول: كان علي عليه السلام إذا أخذ الرجلين في لحاف واحد ضربهما الحد فإذا أخذ المرأتين في لحاف واحد ضربهما الحد

Ishaq Ibn Ammar reported that he asked Imam As-Sadiq (a.): “What is the situation when a person forbidden to marry kisses a boy out of lust?” He said: “A hundred lashes will be given to him.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 200 Hadith 9]

علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن يحيى بن المبارك، عن عبد الله جبلة، عن إسحاق بن عمار، قال: قلت لأبي عبد الله عليه السلام: محرم قبل غلاما من شهوة قال: يضرب مائة سوط

Zurarah reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “The one who practices homosexuality receives the punishment for violating the laws of God, which an illegitimate person receives.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 200 Hadith 8]

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن علي بن الحكم، عن أبان، عن زرارة، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: الملوط حده حد الزاني

Abu Khadijah reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “The Prophet Muhammad (s.) cursed the men who resemble women and the women who resemble men.” He said: “These are the ones who are of the same sex and have intercourse with one another.” [Al-Kafi of Al-Kulaini, Volume 5 Page 550 Hadith 4]

عدة من أصحابنا، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن محمد بن علي، عن علي بن عبد الله، وعبد الرحمن بن محمد، عن أبي خديجة، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: لعن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله المتشبهين من الرجال بالنساء والمتشبهات من النساء بالرجال قال: وهم المخنثون واللاتي ينكحن بعضهن بعضا

Comment:

If there is a person who permits such an act, he certainly does not belong to the followers of the imams (a.), but rather to the followers of the tyrants.

Muhammad Ibn Sirin reported that Umar Ibn Al-Khattab said: “Nothing remained of the habits from the time of ignorance except that i do not care with whom of the people i have intercourse with and which of the people has intercourse with me.” [Tabaqat-ul-Kubra by Ibn Sa’d, Volume 3, page 269 Hadith 3714]

قال: أخبرنا قال: أخبرنا إسحاق بن يوسف الأزرق، ومحمد بن عبد الله الأنصاري، وهوذة بن خليفة، قالوا: أخبرنا ابن عون، عن محمد بن سيرين، قال: قال عمر بن الخطاب: ما بقي في شيء من أمر الجاهلية إلا أني لست أبالي إلى أي الناس نكحت، وأيهم أنكحت

Abu Hurairah and Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “Whoever has intercourse with a womans buttocks or with a man or with a child will rise on the last day with the evil smell of a rotting body.” [At-Tibb-un-Nabawi of Ibn-ul-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, page 201; Al-Matalib-ul-Aliyah of Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani, Hadith 1661]
