The introduction of the book “As-Sahifat-us-Sajjadiyyah”

Question:

What is written in the introduction of the book “As-Sahifat-us-Sajjadiyyah” (the Leaves of Prostration) which was omitted from the translation and was replaced although it belongs to the book and contains its chain to Imam As-Sajjad (a.)?

Answer:

One finds the following:

This is “As-Sahifat-us-Sajjadiyyah” in full form:

“In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful, the revered master and Star of the Religion and wonderful nobleman narrated to us, Abu Al-Hasan, Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn Ahmad Ibn Ali Ibn Muhammad Ibn Umar Ibn Yahya, who comes from [from the lineage of] Ali (a.) and Al-Husain (a.), God be merciful to him.” He said: “It was reported to us by the blessed scholar Abu Abdillah, Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Shahryar, the guard of the chamber of our leader and commander of the faithful, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.), in the month of Rabi’ Al-Awwal of the 516th year, whereby i heard his lecture.” He said:”I heard it from the true scholar Abu Mansur, Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Abd Al-Aziz, the righteous man from Ukbara, God have mercy on him, from Abu Al-Mufaddal, Muhammad Ibn Abdillah Ibn Al-Muttalib Ash-Shaibani.” He said: “It is narrated to us by the nobleman Abu Abdillah, Ja’far Ibn Muhammad Ibn Ja’far Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn Ja’far Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn Al-Hasan, the son of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.). He said: “It is narrated to us by Abdullah Ibn Umar Ibn Khattab Az-Zayyat in the 265th year.” He said:”It was narrated to me by my Uncle Ali Ibn An-Nu’man, the most knowledgeable.” He said: “It was narrated to me by Umair Ibn Mutawakkil Ath-Thaqafi Al-Balkhi from his father Mutawakkil Ibn Harun.” He said: “I met Yahya, the son of Zaid Ibn Ali (a.) and he turned to Khorasan after the murder of his father. I gave him the greeting of peace, whereupon he said to me: “From where do you come?” I said: “From the pilgrimage.” He asked me about his family and his uncle’s sons in Medina and his questions about Ja’far Ibn Muhammad (a.) became more frequent. I reported to him about him and them and their grief about his father Zaid Ibn Ali (a.), whereupon he said to me: “My uncle Muhammad Ibn Ali (a.) used to tell my father not to go into the field and he told him what would happen to him if he went into the field and left Medina. Have you met my uncle’s son Ja’far Ibn Muhammad (a.)?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Did you hear him say anything about the things that will happen to me?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “What did he mention about me? Tell me.” I said: ” May my life be sacrificed to you, i do not love to confront you with what i heard from him.” He said: “Should you be able to frighten me with death? Bring forth what you heard from him!” I said: “I heard him say that you would be killed and crucified just as your father was killed and crucified.” Then his face changed and he said: “God erases and fortifies what He wants and with Him is the Mother of the Book.” (13:39) O Mutawakkil, God supported this cause through us and gave us both knowledge and the sword and He distinguished the sons of our uncles by knowledge alone.” I said: ” May my life be sacrificed to you, i saw the people bowing to the son of your uncle Ja’far (a.). Some of them are devoted to you and your father.” Yahya Ibn Zaid (a.) said: “My uncle Muhammad Ibn Ali and his son Ja’far call the people to life, but we call them to death.” I said: “O son of the Messenger of God, are they more knowledgeable or are you more knowledgeable?” He looked at the ground in silence for a while and then raised his head and said: “Each of us has knowledge, but they know all that we know and we do not know all that they know.” Then he said to me: “Have you written anything about my uncle’s son?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Show me.” I gave him some aspects of knowledge about it and i brought out supplications for him that Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq (a.) had dictated to me and he told me that his father had dictated it to him and he told him that it was a supplication of his father Ali Ibn Al-Husain (a.) from the supplication of the complete scripture. Yahya Ibn Zaid (a.) looked inside until he came to the end of it and said to me: “Will you give me permission for its sharing?” I said: “O son of the Messenger of God, shall i give you permission for what is from you?” He said: “I will bring out to you the complete writing of the supplications which my Father kept from his Father, and my Father gave me the task to guard them and to keep them away from those who are not worthy of them.” Umair reported that his father said: “I rose up to him and kissed his head and said to him: “By God, o son of the Messenger, i follow the religion of God through love and obedience to you and i hope that He will bless me with your guardianship both during my life and at my death.” He gave the writing i gave him to a boy who was with him and said: “Write down this supplication in a nicely readable writing and show it to me. Maybe i will remember it, because i asked Ja’far, God protect him, but he refuses me.” Al-Mutawakkil said: “I regretted my actions and did not know what to do, and Abu Abdillah (a.) did not advance me in handing them over to anyone. Then Zaid Ibn Yahya (a.) asked for a bag and took out a sealed writing from there. He looked at the seal and kissed it and cried. Then he loosened it and opened the seal. Then he spread the writing and put it on his eye and passed it over his face. He said: “By Allah, O Mutawakkil, if you had not mentioned the testimony of my uncle’s son that i would be killed and crucified, I would not have given it to you and you would have desired it, but i know that his testimony is true. He obtained it from his fathers and it will arrive, but i feared that a knowledge like this might fall into the hands of the sons of Umayyah, whereupon they hide it and keep it for themselves in their chambers. Take it and wrap it up and keep an eye on it! Then, when God ends my cause and the cause of those people as it is to end, it will be my entrusted property with you until you bring it to my uncle’s sons: Muhammad and Ibrahim, the sons of Abdullah Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn Ali (a.), for they keep this cause after me.”Al-Mutawakkil said: “I took the scripture and when Yahya Ibn Zaid (a.) was murdered, i went to Medina and met Abu Abdillah (a.). I told him the tradition of Yahya (a.), whereupon he cried and his grief for him increased and he said: “God have mercy on my uncle’s son and unite him with his fathers and grandfathers! By God, O Mutawakkil, nothing else prevented me from handing him the supplication, other than what he feared for the writing of his father. Where is the writing?” He said: “It is here!” He opened it and said: “By God, this is the writing of my uncle Zaid (a.) and the supplication of my grandfather Ali Ibn Al-Husain (a.)!” Then he said to his son: “Arise, O Isma’il, and bring me the supplication which i commanded you to remember and preserve!” Thereupon Isma’il Ibn Ja’far (a.) stood up and took out the scripture and it seemed as if it was the one that Yahya Ibn Zaid (a.) handed over to me. Abu Abdillah (a.) kissed it and put it on his eye and said: “This is the writing of my father and the dictation of my grandfather before my eyes!” I said: “O son of the Messenger of God, may i compare it with the writing of Zaid and Yahya?” He gave me permission and said: “I see that you are worthy of it.” I looked and they were alike, and i did not see even one letter of it differ from any of the other scripts. Then i asked Abu Abdillah (a.) to be allowed to hand over the scripture to the sons of Abdullah Ibn Al-Hasan and he said: “God commands you to hand over the entrusted property to its owners! Yes, hand it over to them!” As i was preparing to meet them, he said to me: “Stay in your place!” Then he turned to Muhammad and Ibrahim and they arrived. He said: “This is your uncle Yahya’s inheritance from his father. He has bestowed it upon you to the exclusion of his brothers, and we place a condition upon you.” They said: “God have mercy on you, speak, for your word is acceptable!” He said: “Do not leave Medina with this writing!” They said: “Why is that?” He said: “Because of it, your uncle feared a thing that i fear for you.” They said: “He was afraid because of it when he found out he was going to be murdered.” Abu Abdillah (a.) said: “You are not safe, for by Allah i know that you will go out as he went out, and you will be killed as he was killed.” Then they stood up while they said: “There is no power and strength but through God, the High, the Powerful! When they went out, Abu Abdillah (a.) said to me: “O Mutawakkil, how did Yahya, the son of my uncle (a.), speak to you: “Muhammad Ibn Ali and his son Ja’far call people to life, but we call them to death?”I said: “Yes, God grant you health! Yahya, your uncle’s son (a.), told me that.” He said: “God be merciful to Yahya! My father narrated to me about his father who reported about his father who narrated about Ali (a.) that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) was overcome by tiredness while standing on his pulpit. In his sleep, he saw men climbing on his pulpit like monkeys and having the people turn on their heels. Then the messenger (s.) sat up and one could see sadness in his face. Therefore Gabriel (a.) brought him this verse: “We made the dream vision which We showed you and the cursed tree in the Qur’an, no more than a temptation to men, and instilled fear in them, but there was nothing more in them but great rebellion.” (17:60) By which the sons of Umayyah are meant. He said: “O Gabriel, do they still appear in my time and in my days?” He said: “No, but the cogwheel of Islam turns from your departure, so that thereby ten remain. Then the cogwheel of Islam at the top of thirty-five turns from your departure, so that five remain. After that, there is no way around the cogwheel of Islam, which is on its pole. Then the pharaohs will rule.” He said: “God revealed for this reason: “We sent him down in the night of destiny, but what makes you know what the night of destiny is?”The night of destiny is better than a thousand months.” (97:1-3) He said: “Then God informed His prophet (a.) that the dominion over this community would fall into the hands of the sons of Umayyah, and they would possess it for a long time, and if the mountains were to be raised up for them, they would be raised up over it until God gave permission for the fall of their kingdom, and in it they turned the enmity to us people of the house with hatred for us. God informed His prophet (a.) of what would happen in their days to the people of the house of Muhammad (s.) and their lovers and followers of them under their rule. He said: “Allah revealed for them: “Didst thou not see those who exchanged the grace of Allah for unbelief and brought their people to the place of destruction? They are cast into hell, and the abomination is a terrible dwelling place.” (14:28-29) The grace of God is Muhammad (s.) and the people of his house (a.) The love for them is a faith that leads to paradise and the hatred for them is an unbelief and hypocrisy that leads to fire”. Then Abu Abdillah (a.) said: “Neither did any of us descendants of the people of the house go into the battlefield to remove an injustice or to revive justice before the Rising of our Riser (Qa’im), except that misfortune destroys him and his revolt leads to an increase in hatred of us and our followers.” Al-Mutawakkil Ibn Harun said: “Afterwards Abu Abdillah (a.) dictated the supplications to me, which amounted to 75 chapters. I lost 11 chapters of them and kept more than 60 chapters, which Abu Al-Mufaddal handed down to us. He said: “It was narrated to me by Muhammad Ibn Al-Hasan Ibn Razwabah, Abu Bakr Al-Mada’ini, the hospitable scribe.” He said: “It was narrated to me by Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Muslim Al-Mutahhiri.” He said: “My father narrated to me from Umair Ibn Mutawakkil Al-Balkhi, who narrated to me from his father Al-Mutawakkil Ibn Harun.” He said: “I met Yahya, the son of Zaid Ibn Ali (a.).” Then he mentioned the whole tradition up to the dream vision of the Prophet (s.), which Ja’far Ibn Muhammad mentioned from his fathers (a.) and in the tradition of Al-Mutahhiri the chapters are mentioned and these are:“[1.] The praise of God, the mighty and the sublime, [2.] the prayer for Muhammad and his family, [3.] the prayer for the bearers of the throne, [4.] the prayer for those who confirm the messengers [5.] his supplication for himself and his special people, [6.] his supplication for morning and evening, [7.] his supplication for things undertaken, [8.] his supplication for refuge requests, [ 9.] his supplication for longing, [10.] his supplication for refuge with God the Exalted, [11.] his supplication for good results, [12.] his supplication for admission, [13.] his supplication for desire Concerns, [14.] his supplication in dark times, [15.] his supplication in the event of illness, [16.] his supplication in inheritance, [17.] his supplication against Satan, [18.] his supplication in the event of threats, [ 19.] his supplication for irrigation, [20.] his supplication for noble morality, [21.] his supplication when one thing makes him sad,[22.] his supplication in difficult circumstances, [23.] his supplication in prosperity, [24.] his supplication for his parents, [25.] his supplication for his children, [26.] his supplication for his neighbors and those, who take him as a guardian, [27.] his supplication for the border guards, [28.] his supplication when frightened, [29.] his supplication when he runs out of supplies, [30.] his supplication for support in settling Debt, [31.] his supplication for remorse, [32.] his supplication for night prayer, [33.] his supplication when requesting a decision, [34.]his supplication when tried or saw someone tried with an exposed sin, [35.] his supplication for satisfaction with fate, [36.] his supplication when listening to thunder, [37] his supplication for gratitude, [38] his supplication for apology, [39.] his supplication for supplication for forgiveness, [40] his supplication for remembrance of death, [41.] his supplication for cover and protection, [42.] his supplication when he finished the Qur’an, [43.] his supplication when he looked at the crescent moon, [44.] his supplication for entering the month of Ramadan, [45.] his supplication when he said goodbye to the month of Ramadan, [ 46.] his supplication for the festival of fasting and Friday, [47.] his supplication for the day at Arafah, [48.] his supplication for the sacrifice festival and on Friday, [49.] his supplication for the defense of the enemy list , [50.] his supplication for fear, [51.] his prayer of pleading and humility, [52.] his prayer of supplication out of urgency, [53.] his supplication in submission, and [54.] his prayer of liberation from worries and the other chapters in the text of Abu Abdillah Al-Hasani, God have mercy on him. “Abu Abdillah Ja’far Ibn Muhammad Al-Hasani.” He said: ” It is narrated to us from Abdullah Ibn Umar Ibn Khattab Az-Zayyat.” He said: “It was narrated to me by my Uncle Ali Ibn An-Nu’man, the most knowledgeable.” He said: “It was narrated to me by Umar Ibn Mutawakkil Ath-Thaqafi Al-Balkhi from his father Mutawakkil Ibn Harun.” He said: “My Master Abu Abdillah As-Sadiq, Ja’far Ibn Muhammad (a.), dictated it to me.” He said: “My grandfather Ali Ibn Al-Husain (a.) dictated it to my father Muhammad Ibn Ali (a.) in front of my eyes.” [As-Sahifat-us-Sajjadiyyah, pages 2 – 15]
