An-Najashi on Mufaddal Ibn Umar and his weakening

Ahmad Ibn Ali An-Najashi writes:

مُفضّل بن عمر أبو عبد الله وقيل أبو مُحمّدٍ الجُعفيّ كوفيٌّ فاسد المذهب مُضطرب الرّواية لا يُعبأ به وقيل إنّه كان خطّابيًّا وقد ذُكرت له مصنفاتٌ لا يعُوّل عليها وإنّما ذكرناه للشّرط الّذي قدّمناه له كتاب ما افترض الله على الجوارح من الايمان وهو كتاب الايمان و الاسلام والرُّواة له مُضطربون الرّواية له أخبرنا أبو عبد الله بن شاذان قال حدّثنا عليّ بن حاتمٍ قال حدّثنا أبو عمر أحمد بن علي الفائديّ عن الحسين بن عبيد الله بن سهلٍ السّعديّ عن إبراهيم بن هاشمٍ عن بكر بن صالحٍ عنِ القاسم بن بريد بن معاوية عن أبي عمرو الزُّبيريّ عنِ المُفضّل بن عمر وله كتاب يوم وليلة وكتاب فكّر (التّوحيد) كتاب في بدء الخلق والحثّ على الاعتبار وصيةّ المُفضّل كتاب علل الشّرائع أخبرنا أبو عبد الله بن شاذان قال حدّثنا أحمد بن مُحمّد بن يحيى عن أبيه عن عمران بن موسى عن إبراهيم بن هاشمٍ عن مُحمّد بن سنانٍ عنِ المُفضّل

“Mufaddal Ibn Umar, Abu Abdillah and they say Abu Muhammad, Al-Ju’fi, is a Kufite, a heretic. He transmits confused information. There is no value in him and it is said that he was a khattabite. There have been books mentioned by him that are not relied upon, and we mention it only to fulfill the condition we set out above. Of him is the book Ma ftarada-llah Ala l-Jawarih Mina l-Iman. It is the book Al-Iman Wa l-Islam and its narrators transmit confused things. We were narrated by Abu Abdillah Ibn Shadhan, who said: “We were narrated by Ali Ibn Hatim, who said We have been narrated by Abu Umar, Ahmad Ibn Ali Al-Fa’idi, from Husain Ibn Ubaidillah Ibn Sahl As-Sa’di, who narrated from Ibrahim Ibn Hashim, who narrated from Bakr Ibn Salih, who narrated from Qasim Ibn Buraid Ibn Mu’awiyah, who narrated from Abu Amr Az-Zubairi, who narrated from Mufaddal Ibn Umar. From him is the book Yawm Wa Lailah, the book Fakkir (At-Tawhid), the book Fi Bad’i l-Khalq Wa l-Hathth Ala l-I’tibar, Wasiyyat-ul-Mufaddal, the book Ilal-ush-Shara’i’. We were narrated by Abu Abdillah Ibn Shadhan, who said: “We were narrated by Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Yahya of his father, who narrated from Imran Ibn Musa, who narrated from Ibrahim Ibn Hashim, who narrated from Muhammad Ibn Sinan, who narratedfrom Mufaddal Ibn Umar.” [Rijal-un-Najashi, page 416]
