Question:

Can a person whom the Messenger (s.) cursed repent and repent?

Response:

Muhammad Al-Baqir (a.) reported that Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “God, I am merely a human being (18:110), I become angry and satisfied. Whichever believer I denied and sent away or made a supplication against, bestow upon him an expiation and purification and whichever disbeliever I approached or granted or bestowed or made a supplication for and he will not be worthy of it, bestow upon him as his punishment and trial.” [Bihar-ul-Anwar of Al-Majlisi, Volume 101 Page 290 Hadith 3]

الحسين بن سعيد أو النوادر: عن علا، عن محمد، عن أبي جعفر عليه السلام قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله: اللهم إنما أنا بشر أغضب وأرضى، وأيما مؤمن حرمته وأقصيته أو دعوت عليه فاجعله كفارة وطهورا، وأيما كافر قربته أو حبوته أو أعطيته أو دعوت له ولا يكون لها أهلا فاجعل ذلك عليه عذابا ووبالا

Similar is the case with the followers of Umar.

Evidence:

Masruq reported that A’ishah said: “Two men came in to the Prophet Muhammad (s.) and spoke about a matter I did not know what it was about. He then became angry with both of them and cursed and reviled them. Then when they went out, I said: “O Messenger of God, whom should any good thing befall after what befell those two?” He said: “And what is the matter with them?” She said: ” You curse and revile both of them!” He said: “Have you not then learned what terms I agreed upon with my Lord? I said: ‘”O Lord, I am but a man (18:110), so whichever of the Muslims I cursed and reviled, let it be a purification and a reward for him.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 2600]

حدثنا زهير بن حرب حدثنا جرير عن الأعمش عن أبي الضحى عن مسروق عن عائشة قالت دخل على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رجلان فكلماه بشيء لا أدري ما هو فأغضباه فلعنهما وسبهما فلما خرجا قلت يا رسول الله من أصاب من الخير شيئا ما أصابه هذان قال وما ذاك قالت قلت لعنتهما وسببتهما قال أو ما علمت ما شارطت عليه ربي قلت اللهم إنما أنا بشر فأي المسلمين لعنته أو سببته فاجعله له زكاة وأجرا

Comment:

Cursing by the Messenger (s.) is not a mistake, as some ignorant people claim, but is correct according to the situation. If a person commits blatant evil, he may be cursed and reviled in that state. If he repents, his situation changes, God willing.
