To his father Azar [6:74]

Qur’an:

“When Abraham said to his father Azar: “You take the idols for gods? I see you and your people in a clear error.” [Al-An’am 6:74]

وإذ قال إبراهيم لأبيه آزر أتتخذ أصناما آلهة إني أراك وقومك في ضلال مبين
Sunnah:

Abu Basir reported that Imam As-Sadiq (a.) said: “Azar was the uncle of Abraham (a.) and a star-seer of Namrud and he did not announce anything except his sighting. Azar said: “I sighted something amazing in my night.” Namrud said: “What is it?” Azar said: “A child is born in our land, by whose hands will be our downfall, therefore I separated the men from the women.” Tarakh had performed intercourse with the mother of Abraham (a.), whereupon she became pregnant. Hereupon they sent someone to the tribes so that they looked after the women and there was nothing in a womb except that they gave information about it. So they looked at the mother of Abraham (a.), but God kept what was in the womb on the backside, so they said: “We see nothing with her.” When she gave birth (to him), she went to some caves and put him in there and suckled him and she pushed a rock in front of the entrance of the cave. Thereupon God put His provision in his thumb and made him suck it so that milk gushed out and he grew up in a day as another grew up in a week and he grew up in a week as another grew up in a month and he stayed as long as God willed him to stay.” [Qisas-ul-Anbiya’ by Ar-Rawandi, page 107 Hadith 95]

أخبرنا السيد أبو البركات محمد بن إسماعيل، عن علي بن عبد الصمد سعد النيشابوري، عن السيد أبي البركات الحوري عن أبي جعفر بن بابويه، حدثنا ابن عبد الله، عن يعقوب بن يزيد عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن سالم، عن أبي بصير، عن أبي عبد الله عليه السلام قال: كان آزر عم إبراهيم عليه السلام منجما لنمرود وكان لا يصدر الا عن رأيه، فقال: لقد رأيت في ليلتي عجبا، فقال ما هو؟ فقال: ان مولودا يولد في أرضنا هذه يكون هلاكنا على يديه، فحجبت الرجال عن النساء، كان تارخ وقع على أم إبراهيم عليه السلام فحملت، فأرسل إلى القوابل لتنظر إلى النساء، ولا يكون في البطن شئ الا علمن به، فنظرن إلى أم إبراهيم، و الزم الله ما في الرحم الظهر، فقلن ما نرى بها شيئا، فلما وضعت ذهبت به إلى بعض الغيران فجعلته فيه وأرضعته، وجعلت على باب الغار صخره، فجعل الله رزقه في إبهامه فجعل يمصها فتشخب لبنا، وجعل يشب في اليوم كما يشب غيره في الجمعة، ويشب في الجمعة كما يشب غيره في الشهر، فمكث ما شاء الله ان يمكث

Jabir ibn Abdillah reported that Prophet Muhammad (s) was asked: “Where were you when Adam was in Paradise?” He said: “I was in his loins and he descended to the earth with me in his loins and I entered the ark in the loins of my father Noah and they threw me into the fire with Abraham in his loins and so no two ancestors of mine ever met in an illegitimate act. God moved me from the virtuous loins to the pure wombs – leading and rightly guiding – until He accepted my covenant for prophethood and my agreement for Islam. He clarified all my attributes and confirmed my mention in the Torah and the Gospel. He raised my rank to His Heaven and bestowed upon me a name of His names and my congregation consists of those who praise (Him). The Lord of the Throne is praiseworthy (Mahmud) and I am the praised (Muhammad).” [Ma’ani Al-Akhbar of As-Saduq, page 55 Hadith 2]

حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن القطان، قال: حدثنا الحسن بن علي بن الحسين السكري، قال: حدثنا محمد بن زكريا الجوهري الغلابي البصري، قال: حدثنا جعفر ابن محمد بن عمارة عن أبيه، عن جابر بن يزيد الجعفي، عن جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري، قال: سئل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله أين كنت وآدم في الجنة قال: كنت في صلبه وهبط بي إلى الأرض في صلبه، وركبت السفينة في صلب أبي نوح، وقذف بي في النار في صلب إبراهيم، لم يلتق لي أبوان على سفاح قط، لم يزل الله عز وجل ينقلني من الأصلاب الطيبة إلى الأرحام الطاهرة المطهرة هاديا مهديا، حتى أخذ الله بالنبوة عهدي، وبالإسلام ميثاقي، وبين كل شئ من صفتي، وأثبت في التوراة والإنجيل ذكري، ورقى بي إلى سمائه وشق لي اسما من أسمائه، أمتي الحامدون وذو العرش محمود وأنا محمد

Muhammad ibn Al-Husain reported that Imam Ali (a.) said: “God placed them in the most excellent place of preservation and gave them the best position. He moved them from the noblest loins to the pure wombs and whenever one of them passed away, another followed him for the religion of God until the glory of God reached Prophet Muhammad (s). He caused him to come forth from the most excellent spring from which he grew and He brought him forth from the most honoured roots of the tree from which His prophets come and from which He chooses His trustees. His lineage is the best of lineages and His family is the best of families and His tree is the best of trees. It grows up preserved and straightens up honourably. He has long branches and a fruit that is unattainable.” [Nahj-ul-Balaghah of Ar-Radi, Volume 1 page 184 – 185]

عن محمد بن الحسين بن موسى رضوان الله عليه عن أمير المؤنين عليه السلام أنه قال: فاستودعهم في أفضل مستودع، وأقرهم في خير مستقر. تناسختهم كرائم الأصلاب إلى مطهرات الأرحام. كلما مضى منهم سلف قام منهم بدين الله خلف. حتى أفضت كرامة الله سبحانه إلى محمد صلى الله عليه وآله، فأخرجه من أفضل المعادن منبتا وأعز الأرومات مغرسا من الشجرة التي صدع منها أنبياءه وانتخب منها أمناءه عترته خير العتر وأسرته خير الأسر، وشجرته خير الشجر. نبتت في حرم وبسقت في كرم، لها فروع طوال وثمرة لا تنال

It is not unusual for the Qur’an to title some persons as father, brother and mother, although they are not so in the biological sense.

Evidence:

“Or were you present when Jacob was dying? When he said to his sons: “Whom will you worship after me?” They said: ” We will serve your God and the God of your fathers Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac, the only God. And we are devoted to Him.” [Al-Baqarah 2:133]

أم كنتم شهداء إذ حضر يعقوب الموت إذ قال لبنيه ما تعبدون من بعدي قالوا نعبد إلهك وإله آبائك إبراهيم وإسماعيل وإسحاق إلها واحدا ونحن له مسلمون

“And (We sent) to Madian their brother Shu’aib. He said: “O my people, worship God. You have no God but He. A clear sign has come to you from your Lord, so give full measure and weight and do not deprive people of what is theirs and do not make mischief on the earth after it has been set in order. That is certainly better for you, if you are believers.” [Al-A’raf 7:85]

وإلى مدين أخاهم شعيبا قال يا قوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من إله غيره قد جاءتكم بينة من ربكم فأوفوا الكيل والميزان ولا تبخسوا الناس أشياءهم ولا تفسدوا في الأرض بعد إصلاحها ذلكم خير لكم إن كنتم مؤمنين

“The Prophet is nearer to the believers than they are to themselves and his wives are their mothers and the relatives by blood are nearer to each other in the Book of God than the believers and the emigrants, except that you do good to those under your guardianship. This was recorded in the Book.” [Al-Ahzab 33:6]

النبي أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم وأزواجه أمهاتهم وأولو الأرحام بعضهم أولى ببعض في كتاب الله من المؤمنين والمهاجرين إلا أن تفعلوا إلى أوليائكم معروفا كان ذلك في الكتاب مسطورا

“And whose scale was light, his mother is an abyss and what makes you know what that is? A blazing fire.” [Al-Qari’ah 101:8-11]

وأما من خفت موازينه فأمه هاوية وما أدراك ما هيه نار حامية
