Third confession in prayer?

Question:

Is it allowed in prayer to confess: “And I testify that Ali is the guardian appointed by God?”

Answer:

Yusuf Ibn Ahmad reported that Imam Ar-Rida (a.) said: “If you bear witness to the confession (Tashahhud) after the second bowing, then say: “In the name of God and through God, all praise and the most beautiful names are due to God. I testify that no one is worthy of worship except God alone who has no partner and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger whom He sent before the last hour as proclaimer and warner with the truth.” Add nothing to this! Then rise up for the third bow and say when you get up: “By the power that God gives me, I stand and sit.” If you make the fourth bow of prayer, then during the confession (Tashahhud) say in it: “In the name of God and through God, all praise and the most beautiful names belong to God. I testify that no one is worthy of worship except God alone who has no partner and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger whom He sent before the last hour as a proclaimer and warner with the truth. The praises and prayers belong to God and the good things, gifts, good deeds, beautiful scents, perfections, graces, blessings and righteous deeds. God deserves what is good, clean, pure, prosperous and redeeming and bad, so that He may change it. I testify that You are the Most Gracious Lord and Muhammad the Most Gracious Messenger and Ali Ibn Abi Talib the Most Gracious Commander and Paradise is true and Fire is true and Death is true and Resurrection is true and the last hour arrives where there is no doubt and God awakens those who are in their graves. Praise be to God who guided us to what we would never have been guided to without God.God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and bring down blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and have mercy on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad even more splendidly than you had blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham, and had them have mercy on you and have peace greetings to them among the inhabitants of the world. You are worthy of praise and glory. God, bless Muhammad, the Chosen (Mustafa) and Ali, the Appointed (Murtada) and Fatimah, the Enlightened (Zahra) and Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, and the right guiding Imams of the family of Taha and Yasin. God, bless your brightest light and your firmest handle and your noblest face and your most necessary side and your next gate and your support of the straight path. God, bless the right guiding, rightly guided, exquisite, righteous, perfectly pure, chosen and pious leaders. God, bless Gabriel, Michael, Rafael, Asrael and Your near angels and all Your sent prophets and messengers among the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth and the God-fearing people of obedience to You and bestow upon Muhammad the best blessings and the greetings of peace. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of God and His blessings. May peace be upon you and the perfectly pure people of your house. May peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of God.” Then give the greeting of peace to your right side, and if you wish, to your right and left side, and if you wish, give it to the direction of prayer.” [Al-Hada’iq-un-Nadirah of Al-Bahrani, Volume 8 Page 451 – 452]

عن يوسف بن أحمد عن أبي الحسن الرضا عليه السلام قال: فإذا تشهدت في الثانية فقل: بسم الله وبالله والحمد لله والأسماء الحسنى كلها لله أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله أرسله بالحق بشيرا ونذيرا بين يدي الساعة. ولا تزد على ذلك ثم انهض إلى الثالثة وقل إذا نهضت: بحول الله أقوم وأقعد، إلى أن قال فإذا صليت الركعة الرابعة فقل في تشهدها: بسم الله وبالله والحمد لله والأسماء الحسنى كلها لله، أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله أرسله بالحق بشيرا ونذيرا بين يدي الساعة، التحيات لله والصلوات الطيبات الزاكيات الغاديات الرائحات التامات الناعمات المباركات الصالحات لله ما طاب وزكا وطهر ونما وخلص وما خبث فلغير الله، أشهد أنك نعم الرب وأن محمدا صلى الله عليه وآله نعم الرسول وأن علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام نعم المولى وأن الجنة حق والنار حق والموت حق والبعث حق وأن الساعة آتيه لا ريب فيها وأن الله يبعث من في القبور، الحمد لله الذي هدانا لهذا وما كنا لنهتدي لولا أن هدانا الله، اللهم صل على محمد وآل محمد وبارك على محمد وآل محمد وارحم محمدا وآل محمد أفضل ما صليت وباركت وترحمت وسلمت على إبراهيم وآل إبراهيم في العالمين إنك حميد مجيد، اللهم صل على محمد المصطفى وعلي المرتضى وفاطمة الزهراء والحسن والحسين وعلى الأئمة الراشدين من آل طه ويس، اللهم صل على نورك الأنور وعلى حبلك الأطول وعلى عروتك الوثقى وعلى وجهك الأكرم وعلى جنبك الأوجب وعلى بابك الأدنى وعلى مسلك الصراط، اللهم صل على الهادين المهديين الراشدين الفاضلين الطيبين الطاهرين الأخيار الأبرار، اللهم صل على جبرئيل وميكائيل وإسرافيل وعزرائيل وعلى ملائكتك المقربين وأنبيائك المرسلين ورسلك أجمعين من أهل السماوات والأرضين وأهل طاعتك المتقين واخصص محمدا بأفضل الصلاة والتسليم، السلام عليك أيها النبي ورحمة الله وبركاته السلام عليك وعلى أهل بيتك الطاهرين السلام علينا وعلى عباد الله الصالحين. ثم سلم عن يمينك وإن شئت يمينا وشمالا وإن شئت تجاه القبلة

Muhammad Taqi Al-Majlisi writes: “It is desirable (Mustahab) during the confession in prayer (Tashahhud) to add what Abu Basir reports of Ja’far As-Sadiq (a.): “In the name of God and through God, all praise and the best names belong to God. I testify that no one is worthy of worship except God alone who has no partner and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger whom He sent before the last hour as proclaimer and warner with the truth. I testify that my Lord is the Most Gracious Lord and Muhammad the Most Gracious Messenger and Ali the Most Gracious Successor and Imam. God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and accept his intercession for his community and raise his rank. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.” [Al-Qatrah, volume 1, page 368]

قال شيخ الإسلام محمد تقي المجلسي رضي الله عنه: ويستحب أن يزاد في التشهد ما نقله أبو بصير عن الصادق عليه السلام وهو: بسم الله وبالله والحمد لله وخير الأسماء كلها لله أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله أرسله بالحق بشيرا ونذيرا بين يدي الساعة وأشهد أن ربي نعم الرب وأن محمدا نعم الرسول وأن عليا نعم الوصي ونعم الإمام اللّهم صل على محمد وآل محمد وتقبل شفاعته في أمته وارفع درجته الحمد لله رب العالمين
