The heart between the fingers

Question:

What is meant by the report that hearts are between the fingers of God?

Answer:

Ibn Abi Jamhur reported that the Prophet Muhammad (s.) said: “The heart of the believer is between the two fingers of the Merciful One.” [Ghawali Al-La’ali of Al-Ahsa’i, Volume 1 Page 48 – 49 Hadith 69]

عن ابن أبي جمهور رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم:  قلب المؤمن بين إصبعين من أصابع الرحمان

Humran reported that Imam Al-Baqir (a.) said: “If a man on your right side has a view and then changes to your left side, do not say anything but good and do not detach yourself from him until you hear from him what came to your ears and he is standing on your right side, because the hearts are between the two fingers of God. He turns them as He wills. In this hour this way and in that hour that way, and it may be that the servant of good will take care of himself.” [Ilal-ush-Shara’i of As-Saduq, Volume 2 Page 604 – 605 Hadith 75]

علل الشرائع: أحمد بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن أحمد، عن موسى بن عمر، عن ابن سنان، عن أبي سعيد القماط، عن حمران قال: سمعت أبا جعفر عليه السلام يقول: إذا كان الرجل على يمينك على رأي ثم تحول إلى يسارك فلا تقل إلا خيرا ولا تبرأ منه حتى تسمع منه ما سمعت وهو على يمينك، فأن القلوب بين إصبعين من أصابع الله يقلبها كيف يشاء ساعة كذا وساعة كذا، وإن العبد ربما وفق للخير

Muhammad As-Saduq writes: “Between the two fingers of God means that they are between two paths of God, the path of good and the path of evil. Neither are any of God’s fingers attributed to God nor is He compared with His creation. He is exalted above it all.” [Ilal-ush-Shara’i, Volume 2 Page 605]

قال الشيخ محمد الصدوق: بين إصبعين من أصابع الله تعالى: يعنى بين طريقين من طرق الله يعنى بالطريقين طريق الخير وطريق الشر إن الله عز وجل لا يوصف بالأصابع ولا يشبه بخلقه، تعالى عن ذلك علوا كبيرا

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud reported that a Jew came to the Messenger (s.) and said: “O Muhammad, God will hold the heavens on one finger and the earth on one finger and the mountains on one finger and the trees on one finger and the creatures on one finger. Then He will say: “I am the King!” Then the Prophet Muhammad (s.) laughed until his back teeth came out and he read: “They have not judged God as He should be judged. The whole earth will be held in His hand on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded up in His right hand. Praise be to Him, and He is exalted above all that which they (His) associate with Him.” – 39:67 – Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud said: “The messenger (s.) laughed in surprise and affirmed the Jew.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith 6978]

حدثنا مسدد سمع يحيى بن سعيد عن سفيان حدثني منصور وسليمان عن إبراهيم عن عبيدة عن عبد الله أن يهوديا جاء إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال يا محمد إن الله يمسك السموات على إصبع والأرضين على إصبع والجبال على إصبع والشجر على إصبع والخلائق على إصبع ثم يقول أنا الملك فضحك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى بدت نواجذه ثم قرأ وما قدروا الله حق قدره قال يحيى بن سعيد وزاد فيه فضيل بن عياض عن منصور عن إبراهيم عن عبيدة عن عبد الله فضحك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تعجبا وتصديقا له

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud reported that a Jewish scholar came to the Messenger (s.) and said: “Has it reached you that on the Day of Resurrection God will take the heavens with one finger and the earth with one finger and the mountains with one finger and the trees with one finger and the water and the field with one finger and the rest of the creatures with one finger? Then He will wave them and say: “I am the King!” Then the Prophet Muhammad (s.) laughed until his back teeth came out to confirm what the Jewish scholar said and he read: “They have not judged God as He should be judged. The whole earth will be held in His hand on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will also be folded up in His right hand. Praise be to Him, and He is exalted above all that they (He) have added to it.” – 39:67 – Abu Bakr said to Abu Ar-Rabi’i: “He laughed to affirm?” He said: “Yes.” Yahya reported that Fudail Ibn Iyad of Mansur added: “The Messenger (s.) laughed to affirm? “He said: “Yes.”Muhammad Nasir-ud-Din Al-Albani writes: “Authentic (Sahih).” [Kitab As-Sunnah of Ibn Abi Asim, Hadith 437; Zilal-ul-Jannah of Al-Albani, Hadith 541]

ثنا أبو الربيع الزهراني العتكي, ثنا جرير بن عبد الحميد, عن منصور, عن إبراهيم, عن عبيدة, عن عبد الله, قال: جاء حبر من اليهود إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم, فقال: أبلغك أن الله تعالى يضع السموات يوم القيامة على أصبع, والأرض على أصبع, والجبال على أصبع, والشجر على أصبع, والماء والثرى على أصبع, وسائر الخلق على أصبع, ثم يهزهن ويقول: أنا الملك, قال: فضحك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى بدت نواجذه تصديقا لقول الحبر, ثم قرأ وما قدروا الله حق قدره والأرض جميعا قبضته يوم القيامة والسموات مطويات بيمينه سبحانه وتعالى عما يشركون سورة الزمر آية قال أبو بكر: قلت لأبي الربيع: فضحك تصديقا قال: نعم, ثنا محمد بن المثنى, ثنا يحيى بن سعيد, ثنا سفيان بن سعيد, حدثني منصور, وسليمان الأعمش, عن إبراهيم, عن عبيدة, عن عبد الله, عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم, نحوه, قال يحيى: وكان فضيل بن عياض يزيد فيه عن منصور: فضحك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تصديقا لقول الحبر؟ قال: نعم. قال محمد ناصر الدين الألباني: صحيح
